Not sure if anyone will be able to help me but here goes...

Looking to buy a catalytic converter for my car but I hear that to pass the NCT it has to have the 'E' mark on it. Do the non type-approved cats have the 'E' mark on them?

    Thanks in advance. :)

I just looked at the specs. for the NCT test and there is no mention of any approval mark on the cat.

Go to this weblink and click on 'NCT Manual' in the first paragraph to download a 94 page specification document.

Are you being told about an 'E' mark by a friend or the person trying to sell you the replacement cat?

The E mark is looked for on Tyres, not cats.
    Cats either work or not.

As said, E-marks are for tyres. You don't need a certified cat as long as emissions are within limits.
Apart from tyres other replacement component parts which must be e-marked include exhaust silencers, catalytic convertors and brake pads
That's odd, I bought one from ebay that didn't have markings for an old car and it passed.

Ah well, that's what I was going to do, just get a cheap one online but then I saw the rsa website and now I don't know what to do!

It says on replacement parts. Just wondering why you're replacing yours, it's a rare enough occurence to have to replace one I'd say.

How do the NCT guys know if it's a replacement one or not?

I imagine some older cars wouldn't have every component stamped with an e-mark, fair enough brake pads but you can't assume cats are replaced every x miles like tyres or pads.

I would say go ahead and buy one anyway but first maybe chat to a couple local exhaust centres and see what they say.

Oh, I definitely need one, the other one is fecked! Hmmm...I'm thinking the NCT guys don't look too closely for E marks on cats. They wouldn't really be able to look for them that easily on brake pads either.

    Hi,

I too new a new Catalytic Convertor as my 04 Huyandi Elantra failed its NCT for emissions.
I believe from some sources it is called a Manivertor on the Elantra. Have shopped around but am getting some outragous quotes. Can anyone advise a reliable source who can do the job for me?

    :(

Try to find a used one via www.partfinder.ie

You could also check www.summerhillspares.ie if you are in Dublin. They might even fit it for you.
