    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I present to you the Penrose Flyers, 1950's Bicycle speedway team, from Ringsend Dublin. Apparently they raced on an oval beside Shelbourne park dog track.

Anyone got any more info on this? Were there other teams? What were the bicycles like?

So the track was infront of Stella Gardens?

My Da raced a bit in the 1950s with St. Brendans Wheelers in Donnybrook. He is 81 now. His younger brother raced too. He met my mother in the club (not a euphemism!).

I have never heard him talking about cycle speedway and I'm pretty sure he never competed but I seem to remember him mentioning the track in Ringsend. I'll be talking to him on Sunday and I'll report back to you two if he remembers anything or has any pictures.

Speaking of old cycling photos, I posted a couple in this thread.

The fifth picture on the page posted by Dalcassian shows a gabled building in the background, up a short bank. I wonder if it's this building beside the Dodder? In which case, would the track have been on the grass in front of Aikenhead Terrace?

Doctor Bob is spot on. The track was on the largest section of grass shown in front of Mary Aikenhead Terrace. Do you know it? Any photos taken in the area? I think the gabled building was a power house or pumping station.
The team photo at the start of this thread was taken on the slope going up to the River Dodder.

Looks like the group picture was taken here http://goo.gl/maps/RuZfS where the steps are now. The house in the background is identical. Used to park the car there in a previous job, never knew of the cycle speedway track there, interesting...

Photo was taken just to the right of the steps, That was back in 1950 / 1954!!! No sign of the track there now. Ahh all our yesterdays!
