iPod Touch won't download Podcasts

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. About 6 months or so ago my iPod Touch stopped being able to download Podcasts directly through iTunes when on wifi. Everytime I try to download one, the screen goes black for a few seconds and it returns to the main screen. I have googled this on some tech forums and other people seemed to experience it too but nothing anyone suggested seemed to fix it. Driving me mad cause I downloaded podcasts a lot. (the software is version 2.2.1):confused:

If you were to ask Apple, what do you think they would say about that, considering that the current version is 4.2.1? It could be some kind of corrupted resource, the iTunes program crashing out due to some unexpected condition - suffice to say that Apple would not accept a bug report unless it still happens on the latest iOS version.

I tried updating the software, everytime I connect it to my laptop and click update it comes back saying most up-to-date version installed already or something! weird

When did you last upgrade iTunes?

Start iTunes then click on Help/About iTunes, observe the scrolling text, the first line gives the exact version of iTunes, please post that here.

Funnily enough I have the exact same problem as you, just checked the version as well and it's 2.2.1 too. Latest version of itunes installed never made any difference. Must try updating the software, can't remember why I never done that.

Have myself an iphone now so no problems! Giving the ipod touch to dad and I doubt he'l be downloading any podcasts but will be following here for a solution anyhow.

It's just a problem with old software. The problems updating can come from the device being locked. Go into settings and set the lock option to never. Plug your iPod up to your computer, slide to unlock so it's at the homescreen. And then try updating it.

Didn't apple charge ipod to upgrade to iOS 3? not sure about iOS4. Think that was free.

I definitely paid at one stage. Perhaps thats an issue.

Just to confirm, you have no bother downloading via itunes on a laptob/PC? Can you download apps via the Apps store on your ipod?

Hi! I actually downloaded a new version yesterday just in case that was the problem but that didn't make any difference. It says I have iTunes version 10.1.1.4

We're talking about the version of the iOS on the iPod, not the version of iTunes - though updating that was a good thing to do too. Now you have iTunes updated, attach your device, go to its main page, and say "Update": what happens?

IIRC they did charge for v3 - but I have no idea what will happen when you plug in an v2.x device today. Just got to try it, I suppose.

Also check that Itunes isn't being blocked by Norton or other anti Virus. Somehow I click 'block all connections' (or similar) when updating itunes before.

When I checked for updates itunes told me there were none. It was only when I fixed this I could update

bnt, I was referring to this post when I discussed the version of iTunes I have installed:

When did you last upgrade iTunes?

Start iTunes then click on Help/About iTunes, observe the scrolling text, the first line gives the exact version of iTunes, please post that here.

When I connect my iPod it won't allow me to update it, when I click update when it is connected it says the current version is installed. I don't think I paid for an upgrade way back that some of you are referring to and I don't seem to even have that option now so I have a funny feeling that does have something to do with it!

There is a way of updating the device to OS 3.0 at no cost, as documented here: download the update files directly from Apple and tell iTunes to push them on. (Apple has now removed the directly-linked files, but the other links appear to work.)

Note that I paid for the OS 3.0 upgrade back when it came out, so I can't vouch for this method of upgrading to 3.0 in particular. I know the method works in general, I even used it to downgrade from 4.x to 3.x last year. That was to get around a known bug that affected the connection at university, but I'm back on 4.2.1 now. That's right - Apple are still finding bugs, and make you download hundreds of megabytes each time they fix something.
