ok so the norm is to have class mates , about 20 to the latest fun filled fantasia day out, approx 2 hours 10.50 per child. Do you think this is OTT , or just the norm in this day and age . have you done a party for less, would it be cheaper to order a face painting person and a clown , any suggs . thanks;)

when i was 6 it was a bit of cake in the kitchen, all adults would be drinkin, us kids would go mental with sugar and wreck the upstairs of the house.

Our wee girl turned 6 the other week, had planned the whole kids party in some place but ended up letting her invite 3 friends over for a slumber party, bunch of sweets and popcorn and dvds and the wii, cheap as chips and they had a great time.No parents expect u to spend that kind of money

My sixth birthday, could have been my seventh, was around the kitchen table, my little bother, a few cousins, and some class mates, with cake, crisps, funsize chocolate bars, and loads of coke and lemomade.

my best memories are from parties in the room at that age. It cant be a case of throwing the kids in the garden and letting them eat some cake, games and goodie bags ftw!!!!!

    man....I miss goodie bags...

A clatter into the mouth is what I got. To remind me I had ruined my parents lives and that they endure their misery because of me.

In return, for my dads 60th I gave him a contraceptive application instructional tape and a several times harder clatter into the mouth. You reap what you sow.

    Them pricks.

my daughter turned six last summer and i invited 10 of her friends for a surprise party in one of those fun house places, they went ape sh!t and my house was spared. it's the handiest option tbh.

In my day in the 80's it was Rice crispie buns, Orange, Cock tail sausages, And cake.

You'd think all the kids were on speed, great craic. I'd say it cost 20quid!!!

She wont remember the fuss at all (what can you remember from your 6th bday?) A fun sleepover will be the winner with loads of sweets,DVD and really late to bed i.e an hour or 2 later than she normally goes. Thats all ya need to do. Dont impress the parents, theyre prob sick of all the "parties" as much as you are.

if they've ALL done it it can seem hard to be the one kid who hasn't. You might get a clown for 100 quid or less. Might save you a wee bit and clowns at 6 were always fun. Half the kids were terrified and half attacked (I mean played with) the clown...good times.

Seriously though is the clowns too dear you could have a good party if planning is involved. if its all girls make it a cupcake fairy party. theres lots of games and planning ideas online.

TK Lemonade and a bit of cake, was good enough for me. What happened to simple things instead of throwing over 100 euro on a party?

best party at that age was a friend of mines who's mom was a legend. We got name tags and the mom had one too coz we kept forgetting her name.

Individual goodie bags with our names on them (at that age IMPORTANT so noone robbed ya) with random bits from the pound shop(mostly mixes of sweets, stickers, bubble wand mix, little toys).

Everyone got a little prize (again pound shop 2 for 3euro ect) if you won a game and if at the end of the day you didn't, there were "best dancer", "best laugh", "funniest jokes" awards, random ones. It was a way to make everyone feel special which at that age can be worth a lot more than some game centre they go to every sunday.

decorate the place too. Oh i've replied 3 times, i'll stop now *blush*

I had my sons 5th birthday party a few months back and had it at home, I bought a load of prizes and had party games. 'the man and the sea' you get a sheet of blue crepe paper to cover a doorway, cut a hole in it and decorate it with colored fish. Make a fishing rod out of any stick shaped thing and each child gets to fish. They stick the rod through the hole and an adult will hang either a booby prize or a real prize on the rod. The booby prizes can be anything yucky a nappy, a bikini bottoms (that was the funniest one) a bag of mushed tomatoes, a sock etc. if the child doesnt' like their catch they can throw it back and get a real prize, very funny they were all in stitches. I printed a pin the tail on the donkey template off the internet and played that. And I got a 'pinata' filled it with sweets and let them beat the ****e out of that for another half hour, cake and happy birthday and home time :) Much cheaper and great fun.

And if you don't want anybody drinking just say so and maybe suggest the adults go for a drink when the kids party is over.

I had most of my birthdays as a kid in my house. The best were the fancy dress party (mix CD of tunes, few flashing lights from Argos, sweets, Coke) and the cupcake decorating one! My mam made loads of cupcakes and icing, and got Smarites, Jelly Tots, sprinkles etc and just let us go at the cakes! Nuggets and chips also included :D

You can spot the kids from the 80s here a mile away :D

Seriously OP,dont break the bank, keep it fun and simple. Kids just like fun..it doesnt have to be expensive.

Kids living beyond their parents' means should be put up for adoption.

Kids of the 80s indeed...good times! We got loaded on red lemonade and rice krispie buns, and usually got a new Barbie, we were a simple lot. Jaysus the cost nowadays would put you off even thinking of having kids...I'm freaking out about getting a car because I know it's gona b a big black hole for my money, nevermind a little person that eats and drinks and has birthdays

wasn't there a rule one guest for each year :p

the OP's was suggesting a cost of more than a week on the dole

make up some crappy lucky bags, get a box of tayto crisps and a few 3L bottles of cheapo lemonade , splash out by using marathons instead of plain chocolate for the rice krispie cakes

kids have too many toys these days so you don't need to bribe the guests into bringing great presents

Have to agree with what everyone has said here, you don't have to spend a fortune for your kid to have a memorable birthday. For my sixth birthday we had a "disco". The mother hung up fairy lights left over from Christmas that twinkled and pushed back all the furniture so we could have a dance. There was cake and sweets and chicken nuggets and cocktail sausages and all that other tasty stuff too. She organised competitions for the best dance, best song, best party piece, best twirl and so on and so on, point was everyone left with a prize.

Aahhh, bring back frilly frocks and doing the "Locomotion". :D

I'd agree with the others - you don't need to spend loads for the kids to have a good time!

Look into organising some party games - stuff like pass the parcel, musical statues, if it's good weather do a treasure hunt in the garden that will keep them occupied! Of course a few people would have their parties at Quasar or the Fun Factory, but we didn't view parties in the houses as being cheapskate at all. A girl in my class used to have a pinata every year, we used to love battering it and catching the sweets that fell out :)

it may have been the norm a year or two ago, from what I recall from my sister and nephews.... but I would imagine price incl burger and chips and cake per child and gift bags? that would be the norm...

you need to add in the cost of bday presents.... nephew turned 10 recently, apparently, what I heard from his mam of bday parties of 2010 for that age, it was norm to give a gift voucher of €20 in a card. High expectations these days still BUT it is up to parents, and imo, a move away from keeping up with that type of thing would be welcomed I would think, to something simpler with less expectation and cost, all that matters is that the child is happy and it's a laugh!

All my birthdays as a child were like this, there is 2 years and 4 days between me and my sister so we always had joint parties. I remember we used to play pass the parcel and musical chairs!!
