I will be changing my reliable peugeot 307 soon for an MPV.

I am leaning towards the smax or the 5008, although quite a few friends have the smax and have given it very good recomendations, the 5008 seems to be getting a lot of awards. I know that it has only been for sale since last year but has anybody bought one and how do they find it?

Smax dude. It a much safer place to invest your hard earned cash.

(P.S. remember those awards have got nothing to do with reliability)

S-Max now starts at over 35k for the base model 115ps version.

Pug starts at just under 31k for the top spec 1.6hdi (110ps) SV model. There should be a black one in stock in a dealer in Offaly who'll do a good deal on it (cancelled order).

I know the Smax has been the default for those who need the practicality but want a decent drive but I have to say the Pug looks great (for that kind of car!), has a great great spec and I think OP should give it a serious look and test drive. I think the Smax is overly expensive and its hard to get a decent spec one second hand. Rare to see a titanium spec on carzone or the likes.

I have driven both.. as rentals and both are grand.

My wife has a C4 GP - which is the same car as 5008. No trouble at all and the rear seats seats leave a flatter floor than S-Max. Plus she has the EGS gearbox and load sof spec that was extra cost in the Ford - auto lights/wipers/PDC/Cruise and Speed limiter...etc..

Don't know about the 5008 but C4 GP also has self levelling suspension - use full when 7-up and towing caravan!

You're implying the 5008 has reliability issues, any evidence of that?

I pulled in a Jan 2010 5008 last year, mid-range spec (they call it Sport over there) for 4 grand cheaper than Pug dealer price here. And that's after paying the VRT etc. Fantastic car, well pleased with it. Pug have always made fantastic diesels and this one is no different. Thought the 1.6 turbo oil burner would be underpowered, but having had it for nearly two months now i can confirm its up to the task, even when loaded. And talk about practical, seats fold up/down with one pull of a strap etc. It's easily a match for the S-Max in those stakes.

Oh did I mention only 156 Euro road tax?

My advice is drive both and see what you think.

Not Hugo but the guy who cancelled that fleet order:D

OP- I was asked a few months back to look at some options to replace a C4 Picasso with a new car, so I was knee deep in MPV brochures for a while. On paper, the 5008 offers great spec for the money and IMHO is the second-best looking of the MPVs after the SMax. The Ford is at least 5k more expensive though, and like-for-like with spec is probably the guts of 10k more expensive. A SMax Titanium is nearly 5-series money...
I'd choose the 5008 if it was my cash. 2010 UK models with low mileage to be had for about 22k or so.

Bensboys, I find myself in the same situation. I have looked at the Smax/Galaxy and the 5008.
To be fair, to compare the 5008 with a Smax, you have to compare like with like, meaning 5008 has 1.6 engine and the Smax has 2.0 engine ( I will stand corrected), so there is a cost difference there straight away. I have two concerns with the 5008, resale value and the other 1.6 engine with a car fully loaded ( I think you need to up in BHP, more money again ) My other half and I are leaning towards the 5008, but what drives me banana's, as some of the other lads have said, about the ' Basic Bog' standard specs for cars in this country.

So, I'm considering going to the uk like 'bazza'! If you do that, theres a bigger range of specs, I think the Smax/Galaxy come out on top over the pug 5008.

bazza, when you bought you car in the UK, is the warranty valid over here in ireland?

Of the two you mentioned, I've driven both and would go for the Smax in a heartbeat (if they were the only two to consider). I know the SMax is a bit more expensive, but I think they're just better put together (and the handling on the Ford is much better). There's also the option of bringing one in yourself, or a grey market import - you end up paying a few grand under the odds for a decent spec, second-hand (basically it has PDC mileage on it, but you're the second owner) car, with an odometer / speedometer in miles, and on less sure ground with the 3rd year of the manufacturer's warranty.

Thanks all for the replies, I was looking at the cost of both of these in the UK and there is quite a saving to be had along with much better spec's as already outlined.

Yakuza - forgive my ignorance but what is a grey market import?

The only thing with going down ths import is selling my current car!:(

In general, the term grey market refers to products being sold in a different market to that which they were produced for.

Some dealers here in Ireland buy very low mileage cars from the UK (normally new, with barely more than PDC mileage on them (Pre Delivery Check)) and sell them here. They are UK spec cars (i.e. with miles on the odometer / speedometer, and the extras / gadgets / gizmos that Johnny UKPunter would get if he were to buy over there). There's nothing illegal with it, but the established car dealers tend (as I understand things) to frown upon it as they can't match on price, and they tend to be a bit sniffy about honouring warranty work (esp in the 3rd year which a UK car would be entitled to, whereas most cars here come with 2 years). It's essentially like going to the UK yourself, buying the car there (minus VAT), and bringing it over here, paying VAT / VRT etc except the garage does all the legwork for you. You can also get low-mileage 2nd hand models too.

If you go on to resell the car, you'll be at a small disadvantage to others of the same age due to the mileometer, but if you're going to keep it then that's less of a consideration.

I was looking at some such SMaxes in Murphy & Gunn in Rathgar this time last year, but, even though the price was reasonable, I decided against it as it was due to be facelifted very soon afterwards. I ended up going with the QQ+2 (itself being facelifted here this March), but the SMax would have been 2nd on my list for 7-seaters (after coming to terms with the fact I couldn't afford an XC90 with decent mileage :))

Now that the Mazda 5 is being offered with a 1.6D engine producing 115bhp is it worthy of consideration or is it up against the Grand CMax and 3008?

Based on the TV ads I've seen for the Mazda 5, and seeing the Grand C-Max, I reckon it's the same car with different badges.
