Hi, I am really sorry if this has been asked previously, but i am after getting a ps3, (€free). It doesn't recognise discs, thats why he gave it to me. Its an original PS3 Phat. 40 GB hard drive, the firmware is 3.15. Not sure if thats important,

Anyway, is there anyway to fix it? I presume the laser that reads the disc is gone.

replace laser. Be careful, loads of them on ebay are refurbs, even if they say brand new. Most of them work 1-2 months.

If you decide to sell it let me know, I'm interested

Is it hard to replace the laser? Is it an expensive job? Just to add, its not reading games or dvd's.

    define "hard to replace", please.

It would be easy for me but most of my mates wouldn't have a clue where to start. There are plenty of tutorials on the net, just google.

As for price, depends, you can get one from ebay for about 30-60 quid, no guarantee they will last, some shops in town are doing that for 80-100e with some warranty.

I think I am gonna replace the blu ray drive altogether. €88 delivered free to the North. £11.99 to Ireland. Handy to have mates north of the border.

Maybe a browse down 10 threads would have helped.

Anyways , the whole blu ray drive is easiest, lens is do-able if you are handy with a screwdriver. :D
