95 VW Polo scrap or repair?

    Hi folks,

I have a 1995 VW Polo which, according to two mechanics who have looked at it, needs a new distributor. A garage has quoted me €330 for the job which seems a little steep (maybe even enough to give up the ghost and just get it scrapped).

Just wondering if anyone out there knows if this sounds something like the right price for a distributor for a 1.0 95 Polo? If I was to go about getting parts from a scrap yard do any of you have any suggestions of where to check (I live in Dublin 8)?

Or, if it is to be scrapped... eh, how do you go about doing this as I'm even clueless about that bit? So eh, lots of of questions, any help would be apppreciated!

i put a new distributor cap and rotor arm, aswell as a new set of plug leads, plugs and a coil on my girlfriends sisters 98 1.0 polo (which i asume is the same/ similar), and all the parts only cost circa 100 quid and too about an hour to do

Seems that a new Distributor would be +€100... based on the fact they are from £70 in the UK.. Add fitting and VAT.

Don't bother with one from a scrap yard - it will be as bad as your own.

Cheers lads, it's looking like the scrapyard to be honest. Think the wheels are worth more than the car at this stage!

Is this the right part for your Polo? I have personally ordered stuff from the vendor and he seems reliable. If the car is not rusty and in general in ok shape you'd be mad to scrap it.

That ebay item is for the 999cc AER engine introduced in 1997. If your car is 1995, it might be the 1043cc engine, what does your tax disk say for engine size?
I love my little Polo, I hope you can keep yours going.

Cut your losses and scrap it. I had a 98 Corsa (for 4 months :() and it went just went horribly wrong.

Rear suspension collapsed, leaking water, and most importantly the fuel pump went so it wouldn't start without giving the fuel tank a good bang.

Didn't cost anything to get it scrapped. Haven't regretted it

Ah, but that was a Corsa. (No offense to Corsa lovers...)

I have a 96 Polo, need to get a few bits and pieces done. Wheel bearing and brake pads mainly. Had the thing for 7 years now, great little car.

It is tempting to change from time to time but overall I don't think it's worth it (got a call yesterday from a lad I know in a local dealer, €3,000 for an 02 1.0 litre Polo (the one with the square lights). Still think it might be better for me to hold onto my old one though.
