You could take the train...3.5hrs though :/ (Irishrail.ie)
    I'm sure there's some bus from buseireann.ie

I wouldn't say you'd get much connections to Westport from Galway

Half 12 train direct from Heuston in 10 euro one way at the moment. Takes 3 and a half hours.

The bus from Busaras to Galway, then a change to Westport is 17 euro return. Takes well over 5 hours though. There's also the option to travel changing at Athlone, still over 5 hours. Seems to be no direct Dublin Westport buses as far as I can see, except on a Sunday.

Train is worth the money, far more comfort and direct. Usually a cafe service and power adaptors at each table for laptop/mp3 player. Book online and they have special fares midweek.

For once the train is probably better but allow an extra half an hour or more for delays and signal faults etc

There are student fares that are discounts of regular walk-up fares but this would still be much more than the web fare quoted above. Student return is €35 and this requires a valid student travelcard http://www.studenttravelcard.ie/
