Human Error or Something else? Bord Gáis

I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but it's under 'heating' so I assumed it is :)

Today we received our first bill for our gas heating in Carlow today (we are students)

We had been using the heating quite alot and were expecting quite a hefty bill but when we read the bill it was €370! Way over what we were expecting, after around 30 mins of disecting the bill, we realised we had used over 600 units of energy. We thought it was way over the top. so We checked at our meter.

According to the bill the meter's last reading was at 63795, but upon checking, the real reading was at 63395.

We added it up and it was around 150 euro, so we called them and they said it must have been a simple error.

However I have my doubts as it was our very first bill for the household and maybe they tried to pull a fast one, and thought we wouldn't notice.

Okay maybe it was a simple error but like I said I have my doubts.

Anyone else experience something similar to this?

check your bill to see how many kilowattt (kw) of gas you have used. then check the kw/hr output of your boiler. then try work out the amount of hours per day you have been using and multiply the two.
    e.g 15 kw boiler x 10 hrs = 150 kw used.

be honest with yourself though, a lot of people only claim to use the heating an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening after getting a large bill

The bill was probably estimated, they do that a lot, and it is all way's out. Start reading the meter your self and call it in.

Would depend whether the reading on the bill was estimated, customer enterred or a reading taken by Bord Gais.

I don't think there is any great conspiracy in any case as if you paid that whopper bill, you would then only be paying standing charges until the units evenutally caught up.

Yes it was 'estimated' but I see the problem in that they got all the figures right except one of them. They got 63795 instead of 63395 so was it really an estimate?

I don't think you read my entire post, we seen the error after looking at our meter, called them and got the price of €150 over the phone.
