Just after finding out that if your motor tax is in arrears due to your car being off road or in a garage you need to get a form signed by the garage your car was in so you don't pay the arrears, but the garage has to be SIMI registered? Just wondering is this true what I have been told?

no not really it's called asking a question with or without a source, I came on here to see if anyone else had heard of it so you can quit being smart

I'm afraid it is true guys. I re-taxed my van today which has been off the road for past 2 months after getting it signed at my local garda barracks. Guy at hatch in motor tax office told me I timed it well as they will very shortly be new rules brought in when looking to get a vehicle taxed & getting it signed for being off the road. Apparently you will have to prove it was off the road (thru registered SIMI garage) and you must also have proof that you cancelled your insurance policy for the same period that vehicle was off the road. I am told you will need to produce a letter from your insurance company stating insurance was cancelled for said period otherwise you cannot get away with not paying arrears. I was also told when this is introduced that you will no longer be required to call to a garda station to get signed declartion of non use as there will be a new/different form in use.

Like I said, I heard it from the horses mouth today, so more hardship on it's way for all us hard-pressed motorists.

There's a thread in Classics about this, some of them will have real issues if their project cars or cars in storage suddenly are liable for decades of back-tax.

thats not true...quite obvious as you will want your car insured whether or not you are using it...

There is however some talk of bringing in a SORN procedure, perhaps similar to the UK...

I don't really understand the ins and outs of it, you'd know better than I.

The thread's here for anyone interested: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056108971

That was only an idea of Noel Dempseys the Minister of transport. However he has no power what so ever to implement this as all Motor tax laws etc are made/changed by the Minister for the evviroment.

the gormless one was on about this some months ago, his brainwave (for the want of a better word) was that unused vehicles were a blot on the envoirnment, they were leaking pollutents into the ground and the athmosphere, plus they were kinda unsightley, (also it would bring in a nice bit of much needed revenue)

It's not in play and there's no chance a law could be brought in where a SIMI registered business would be your only option as this would be similar to it going to a cartel of sorts. (not saying that SIMI is a cartel but you get my drift).

There were rumours of it being required to be declared off the road from time it's off the road and not after the event, this would be a much more simpler way to implement.

Trust me, I hope it's not true but, it's what I was told from bloke in motor tax office this morning as I re-taxed my van which I had got signed for at local garda barracks being off road for past couple of months. He says it coming in to law very soon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭BrianD

Are that many people who actually have a car off the road?

My understanding of the recent proposals is that you would no longer be able to declare a car "off the road" at all.

It seems that the UK system would be a good system to copy.

The civil service unions won't allow this as the counter staff at the tax office will require full training to deal with the new forms and then they will require more pay to handle the new forms and that won't happen in this economic climate..... ;)

Seriously, if the authorities were able to properly collate the use of vehicles on public roads (checkpoints and now anpr cameras) and then check the reg from their database, there would be less false declarations for non use. Then the genuine off the road owner wouldn't have to jump through hoops to re-tax the motor.

going to look at a carvan tomorrow, it has not been on road in a while and hasnt been taxed afaik... not buying from a garage never mind an SIMI garage. Tax office going to ask me to pay back tax?

I got an RF100 form stamped in the guarda station last friday to say my car was off the road for a year (which it was)....no questions asked, nor any questions asked in tax office.

Also, really can't see it being true about having to prove you canceled your insurance cause my car was outside for a year and worth a few quid so it was dam sure staying insured.

No. You will only have to pay from the date you bought it . So get the receipt dated 1st Feb:D

The real reason they're discussing bringing in this new law is because they're loosing a lot in people avoiding back tax. I think they mentioned 700 million, could have been 70 million, can't remember, but a lot anyway!

    @Kristo

If i applied for tax say tomorrow do they charge you for all of Jan, that how it works? thanks for that info!

awaiting goody two shoes to tell me how this would be unfair to wait till Feb 1st and its my fault country is way it is!

It would be unfair for some people... I cycle or run to work 4 or 5 months of the year and I dont tax the car... why should I pay tax if i dont drive it on the road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭BronsonTB

No definitive decision has been taken on this but more than likely people will be genuinely able to class their car as off the road & not have to pay the back tax. And those that do not...will....

Time will tell on this one.....
