Sluggish Ubuntu 10 on dual Xenon- any ideas?

    Downloaded & installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the following spec. machne;

    Asus PCH-DL MB
    Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz CPU
    4GB RAM
    GeForce FX 5200

    It's a standard desktop install with Nvidia drivers added and appearance-visual effects set to none

    I know it's an oldish machine but I thought it might have enough grunt to run this. However, everything is very sluggish. eg. It takes about 10 seconds to launch Ubuntu Software Centre. Not at all snappy.

    Anyone any ideas what could be wrong? Some bios setting somewhere?

    Thanks

    The Software Centre usually takes around that number of seconds to open. Ubuntu is actually quite bloated in comparison to many traditional Linux distros. If you want your desktop to be lightning fast try a lighter environment than Gnome - something like Openbox or LXDE.

    If you're sticking with Gnome there are things you can do like install preload and prune down the startup applications. Also install ailurus and auto-tweak Firefox.

    Just timed opening it on an Optiplex 745 (about 3-4 years old), probably similar in terms of grunt, and it took just under 10 secs.

    You don't mention what storage configuration you have... that would be the primary bottleneck here, IMO.

    Standard SATA drives = slow, high-end SAS RAID card + 15K SAS drives in a striped configuration = fast.
