Just did my 6 month oil change this afternoon and spotted this:

    gunk2.jpg
    ('00 728i)

Signs of coolant entering the block?
Car runs like a champ, has never overheated in the 3 years i've had it, overly-regular servicing by myself, oil in spec etc etc.

    Thoughts?

Could just be condensation from lots of short journeys?

    Check the coolant for contamination.

    I wouldn't get too stressed.

I'd be a bit worried myself. Are you doing a lot of short runs, or does the car not be started for several days / weeks?
With the exceptional cold weather we had I'm just wondering if you got some condensation build up. Doubtful the breather system is clogged with those short intervals for oil change.

If you haven't done it at least try an hour long drive. Don't go hard or far and check coolant from time to time!

Sorry can't help more, best of luck!

Going O/T a small bit but isnt that oil old for new oil. It was filled over 2 years ago or would that make a difference. As in would it lose any of its detergent properties in that time???

I do non stop short runs.

Car starts in the morning, drives 3 miles, sits for 7 hours and then drives 3 miles home five times a week. Then lots of short trips to the shops, cinema etc, all under 5 miles.

Recently i've been doing lots of short trips, I used to drive for a lot longer going on trips and spins, but haven't had the time.

Condensation hopefully, car only has 93k miles and last oil change was about 6 months ago, 5000 miles ago.

Just had a look on the bimmerboards, seems to be very normal for the M52 2.8 to show this sludge in cold temps with short trips.

    Identical:

    Thank the lord!

Had a BM many moons agon and it suuffered like that from short runs.
Buddy had a 633 csi and it did the same. Had to take it for a gallop from time to time to "Keep it Lit"
    :D

I clean my bay maybe once a year, it never gets dirty. The block is so big there's no gaps down below and the sound insulation under the bonnet hugs the top of the engine keeping it dirt free. :)

Thanks for the tips folks, never knew about condensation until now.

Off topic Voodoo but now the panic is over what ever happened to the 740 hunt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Someone else in Ireland (can you believe it) bought the 740i Sport Individual I wanted (from the UK) in the two weeks I had mine up for sale. Was gutted and I got calls for mine days after I found out. :(

I don't want any old 740i, it had to be incredibly special and unique, hence the reason I took mine off the market instantly as thats the only one I wanted.

The extra power and V8 rumble would be nice, although the exhaust note of the E38 is nothing like that of the E32. Similar to yourself I do about 10 miles a day and these beasts only come in to their own on a long journey.

Indeed, I flew up to Portadown BMW today for oil and air filters and its such a nice drive. You really have to watch the speed on the motorway, I often find myself tipping over 140-145kph and not even noticing the difference. We should do a straight line race one day and see what the difference is between the 735 and a 728 sport. :D

I really want to do the All The Way Round trip this year so might see you there. I reckon you'd have me beat. :)

    735 was 238BHP / 345Nm from the factory
728 was 195BHP / 280Nm - what sort of improvement does the M-Sport get on that?

Your motor is more than likely WAY better looked after than mine though which will make a difference!

Sport has a taller diff ratio, 1:3.15 and higher stall torque converter. The I6 is also 150kg lighter than the M62 4.4l, i'm sure its at least 100kg lighter than the 3.5l V8.

I reckon it would be closely matched for the first hundred metres then the gap would widen.

From my Dad's car years ago, same reaction as you when I saw it, folks in the know reckoned it was condensation from short spins. Dad took up Golf again (he was 20 odd years away from it) though so his car gets some decent enough spins now.

I've only driven a regular 728 and it was very slow of the mark, way slower than my old 523 but ok once it got going. The 735 is no supercar but responsive enough from a standstill.

She struggles with more than 3 passengers and a full tank alright, need the V8 for ferrying dignitaries around. :)

    +1

Were it not for other drivers in this country, you could cruise comfortably all day at 200km/h. A real motorway muncher, the E38 :)
