Naval personnel face quiz over gun

NAVAL Service personnel are set to be interviewed later this week in a bid to trace a missing weapon and ammunition.

All Navy personnel who had contact with the LE Niamh, the ship whose armoury is now missing the handgun, are expected to be interviewed by a joint garda-military police team trying to trace the weapon. Between 40 and 50 Navy personnel have had contact with the patrol ship involved over the period in which the weapon is believed to have been unaccounted for.

The ship -- which, like all other Irish patrol vessels, operates from Haulbowline Naval Base in Cork -- was revealed to have a missing weapon after a routine inspection.

surley this would be fairly easy to trace ? are weapons still signed for and serial numbers recorded?

Im not certain about that on a vessel but im sure the procedure is the same for at sea as in Barracks.

The weapon can be traced back to the NS if it's found but the issue is when it might be found and under what circumstances. If it's been found to have been used in a murder or other serious crime then I think there are going to be some serious questions to be answered.

It's not. Anything more is OPSEC. Particularly in the current circumstances. Heowever there has been breaches of security in the NS recently, remember there was a seaman in CM for passing info on ship movements?
We all know members of the DF re being approached by criminal elements seeking access to weapons or ammo.

might be able to understand if it was lost in a conflict or something similar. And the impression I get is that it has been missing for a while.

It was reported missing long before it made the press. Otherwise you are incorrect.

Just goes without saying, we all need to be more vigilant nowadays and moreso whenever we have access to this sort of sensitive equipment. You should always keep an eye out on those around you and if you think someone is up to something suspicious or secretive with any piece of equipment - even though you may be wrong - dont be afraid to report it up the line.

If it fell overboard, they'll be searching for it for quite a long time...

There was once a Steyr that went for a dip... think thats the only one thats ever gone missing but they marked its position at the time.

Not sure how they do it on a naval vessel. I assume they went missing from the 'lock up', so there would be no signature to identify the culprit. So it will be down to who had the keys, or access to the keys.

Folks, could we refrain from going into the specifics of where weapons are kept in barracks or on ships? Just saying "The Armoury" will suffice.

People are watching and what not...

Then you should stop right there.

Hard to think that a pistol 2 mags and 100rds could be lost over the side?

i would say for certain that if one had any interest in weapons kept in military or any other kind of establishment, they would already know where they are kept, they would not be depending on boards.ie to get a whiff of that.

Weapons on a ship are kept on the Captain's Table, along with the Fish Fingers.
