Got my renewal today and my insurance company have increased my premium
by about 40 euro despite having another year of no claims etc.

Has insurance, like motor tax increased due to the budget?

Is it still possible to negotiate a better deal by telling them you found a better quote elsewhere?

oh it has.. get used to it.. its probably going to go up again next year too as all insurance companies are getting hit hard by all the claims on car, company and house policies at the moment and they announced another rise there a few weeks ago in the press..

It's been covered a good few times - it's gone up for many, if not most people. Shop around - and include brokers too. My wife got a far cheaper deal with Allianz via a broker, then with Allianz directly. It was also about 33% less than her renewal quote from her previous insurer, so it was definitely worth the time to shop around. In fact, I don't understand why people don't routinely shop around anyway.

Not always, there are lots of posters saying that their company had absolutely no interest in matching what they were offered elsewhere. Other people have said that they got a cheaper quote with the same company when they got a quote as a new customer as opposed to a renewal for an existing company.

My recent experience may be of relevance here. Got renewal notice from my insurers (€490) shopped around and best I could get was €405 (with bestquote). Went back to original brokers and could only get it down to €450. They rang me back again and I told them not to bother unless they could match the €405. In fairness they did ring me back again but could only offer €438. Interestingly the cover was identical and from the same company.

Moral of the story is as always shop around and get as many quotes as possible. Its a bit of a pain but worth it.

go online, get cheaper quotes from the likes of 123.ie, go back to your agent, show them the cheaper quotes and get the price down.

Just a note, if you can stay with a local broker, it's so much better and worth it in the event of an accident. They wont screw you with nonsense admin charges and you wont be left on hold for ages at call centres. Always try and support local, even if its a few quid more - its worth it.
