Bit of a long shot here, I am heading to Lanzarote next week to get a few miles in, is there anyone else going out there or do you know of any clubs/teams going out there for some training......Any advice on routes would be appreciated, thanks.

This is my fifth January heading to Lanzarote for a holiday with some training. Free accommodation and generally decent weather keeps bringing me back.

I'm going on Wednesday for a week and we stay in Playa Blanca. There's an animal climb taking one of the roads out of Blanca up to a village called Femes. But generally the best cycling to be had is from the national park of Timanfaya right up to the North around Haria. If you're staying in Puerto Del Carmen it's an ideal starting point to exploring either end of the island as it's pretty much halfway.

I'll only cycle Thurs/Fri/Sat, maybe Sun and then run the next 3/4 days instead. We rent bikes from a German guy out there rather brining our own.

It's a fantastic base for cycling albeit I find I have to disregard average speed as the roads are so rolling and winds generally quite stiff.

Here's the kind of routes I normally do...

Was there i october, stayed in porta del carmen and rented good bikes fro a german guy,Roland. Make sure to book in advance as not many good bikes.Island is fantastic for cycling, roads are great and fabulous food stops. The climb up tp the observatory is a good one as is Timanfaya volcanic park.
We used a basic tourist map and went all round the island without any bother.
Also, there was very little wind so it depends on the luck of the draw.

Just checked the weather forecast for there, apparently it's going to lash down from Wednesday, thunder storms also with the possibility of hurricanes.

Just to give my 2 cents.

Was there last year and while there isn't any mountains the cycling there is really good and would agree with the earlier posters about the hill into Femes. Especially the short, steep from the other side, only about 1k but must be 15%!!! (or else I really did suck more than usual)

Wind can be a problem, but luck of the draw on that one. I did a loop of the island, there is a good climb up to the observatory, especailly coming from the north of the island, it has a few switchbacks as well so although relatively short in Alpine terms it is a good test. Avg 5%, over about 5 miles (coming from the village).

Found it great training to be honest, head out early coz even in January it can get really hot. I found it a problem trying to keep the water cool. Keep an eye out for shops etc cos you're going to need cool water.

There is also a nice little leg burner in the middle of the island, jut east of Teguise up to some kind of Castle.

Stick to the main roads as many of the other raods are nothing more than dirt tracks so a normal tourist map will be more than enough.

    Enjoy

was out there b4 Xmas, is a class spot for training/cycling. Club La Santa do training weeks for groups and have a couple of group outings every week. They even have a training week for the Etape sometime in June/july. They are expensive tho

There is a nice long climb heading back out of la Santa heading for Peurto del carmen 2. Cheap flights and staying in Carmen probably ure best bet

    Lanzarote sounds reallyt good. I cycled in Tenerife with 2 friends last year;
cycled a short northern loop & then cycled up to Mount Teide from the south. It was very tough, but enjoyable.

Any idea how Lanzarote compares to Tenerife for training?

    Thank you!

Heading again on Jan 31st for 10 days same as last year, not training just doing leisure spins etc got great inspiration last year when I met a guy cycling with a wooden leg, the place is crazy with cyclists from jan onwards.

Can ye post the name and number of the shop you all hire from, I got mine from the guy in Pto del carmen up from the casino, I will dig out his name and number.

Yeah, Renner that was the guy.

Got a carbon frame, ultegra. Can't recall the name of the bike but was fine for the few days.

Helmet was stunningly awful though, so bring your own.

There was a thread on this last year which is where I got the info on renting.
Have to say that we didn't bother with helmets but would say you would be better to bring your own,and pedals and a few spare tubes.
Would highly recommend a spin to Playa Quemada which is near Puerto del Carmen.Tiny little viillage right beside the sea with only one road in and out-but what a road!! Great descent and climb back out.
There are three restaurants, all good but the one back up from the seashore was particularly good.
