Dying hair at home

    Hey all,

Despite not even being 26 yet, I have started to get quite a few grey hairs and I think it's time I considered colouring my hair (sob). I was thinking that if I have to dye it anyway, I wouldn't mind going for a colour that's a bit different. I have never dyed my hair at home, only had highlights in the past a few times. I had red ones which faded to a horrible bronze colour but I still love the idea of going a reddy-brown mahogany colour. Is this likely to go bronzy as well? My natural hair is dark brown. I've seen some L'Oreal ones that look gorgeous so I am really keen to try a mahogany or black cherry type colour.

I'm a bit anxious about 1) my hair turning some weird colour or having a weird reaction. I guess I will do a patch test first but how does that work exactly? Does that not mean mixing up the colour too much in advance of dying? I am nervous about the 'black henna tattoo' warning on all the boxes, I stupidly did have one done a few years ago not realising they were dangerous. Also, how long can you expect these dyes to last? How often do you need to redye? I know the questions are stupid but I've never done it before. Would appreciate some advice!

hey ! well ive died my hair loadsssss of times at home like loads

it depends what you want you can have a semi permanent dye : which mean you put the die in and it will start to fade back in with your natural colour . semi lasts about 6-8 weeks ! ive had alot of semis and they are fine ...

or option 2 : permanent , which mean it does not fade it grows out .. which means u will have roots ! and an up keep is nessasary

i have dark brown hair and i too want tht maghony colour and i used a loreal dye a semi and it was nice but you couldnt really see it that well only under the light !

ok patch tests are soo easy == all u do is buy your dye and in the dye it will tell u how to do a patch test-- it involves (not mixing the product ) but putting the colourant using a cotton bud behind your ear and leave for 24hrs , if your skin gets irritated or swollen then your allergic

im not too sure about the henna tatoo cause ive never had one ! i just says tht if youve had one , you could get a reaction !

home dyes shouldnt go a funny colour unless like your dying your hair from brown to blond at home.. that will go ginger ! but ye the red would go a bronze colour cause vibrant colours fade

i really hope this helped sorry if i left anything out x

+1 to everything that mascara said. one other thig is that newspapers and old towels are your friend, can be messy the first few times you try it. oh and before i forget vaseline, put it around your hair line and on the tops of your ears, stops the tell tale stains:D

Brilliant thanks! So like, if I dyed my hair magohany with a semi permanent colour, would it go brassy or would it just wash out leaving my hair its normal colour before it had a chance to go brassy? I'd like to try the semi permanent first, I think. So would it be OK to dye my hair every 6 or so weeks or is that too much? It grows ridiculously fast!

I would usually recommend semi permenants, but it might not take to the grey (I think it depends on the luck of the person). You should try a semi first though. If you reapply a semi before the old one has warn off then you run the risk of the colour being permanent (so I hear).
You're hair going brassy depends on your hair and how it takes the dye, it pretty hard to perdict! In general most people aim to dye their hair about once every 6 weeks for root regrowth, and the dyed section of hair needs only a fraction of the time, but this will all be on the box!
You've used Henna before so you should do all the necessary patch/allergy tests.

Lastly, you can buy a product in boots, colourB4, and it takes the dye out of your hair if it goes wrong. Read up on it first before you buy it though. Hope this helped

Hey! Ive used home dyes loads of times and I had my hair that reddy mahogany colour for years! Unfortunately tho they stopped makin the dye I used so I cant recommend it to ya! :( Dyin your hair at home is fine but ya shud get a mate to put it in for ya so to make sure its even! And if ya have long hair Id recommend gettin two packets of the dye!
To be honest if ya have the money, Id say get it done in the hairdressers or get a hairdresser mate to do it for ya if ya have one! That wouldn be too dear! I just think that with the hairdressers , the quality of the colour is better and it lasts longer!! So its worth the money! Lots of places now have 2 for one offers on aswell, so if a friend was gettin her hair dyed aswell , ya cud split the cost and it wud only be about 30 quid!
The mahogany colour does fade after a while and ya need to keep reapplyin it so Id say give ur hair a break after a month or 2 and put it back to your natural colour for a while to avoid build up of that mahogany colour in your hair! Thats what happend me and it didnt look the best! :( Good luck with ur new image anyways! :) Change is always good! :) Hope it turns out nice!

Aghh OK, I really need to cover the grey so thats my main issue. So worried about having an allergic reaction as well! What if I can never dye my hair now? Cos one of one stupid tattoo i thought was grand when I was a kid!

TBH I don't really have the money for the hairdressers, I think its about 60 quid or something usually at the very minimum (dont know any salon near me that does 2 for 1 or anyone who'd want to get it done with me). I know they do it for 15 in Toni and Guy academy but am a bit afraid of letting a student do it. I've had a couple of bad cuts in there.

Could anyone actually recommend a nice mahogany dye? I am eyeing up the L'Oreal ones but haven't really looked at other brands. My hair is just about shoulder length (long grown out bob) - would I need two packs do you think?

I have just had my first experience of home dyeing and uh-oh what a hassle

I used one of the vibrant xxl live reds - and i put the vaseline around the hairline which was my first problem - some of the vaseline got into the hair which meant no dye took  so I sorted that by brushing hair differently ;)

It looked fabulous - for about two weeks then the regrowth started to show  maybe it was only because it was a fashion colour but it looked really awful with the two colours so I used colour B4 which is an amazing product :D that stripped the all the red out and left me with beautifully conditioned hair that was actually a shade lighter than my natural - Result :D

To cover grey i would suggest you start with one of the level 1 colourants - nice and easy that last for 8 washes :) they are a bit hard to come by - try some of the smaller chemists. They dont have peroxide or ammonia so wont damage your hair but may give it the lift you need.

Ahh I wish they still made the dye I used, it wud have been perfect for ya!! I defo think Loreal is the way to go if ur lookin to dye it at home! Dont use any of those boots own brands,, really bad in my opinion!! My hair went orange with them before! If ya go into Boots and have a look at the Loreal ones u wil defo find one to suit u! Theres a huge range of them! and they only about €8! :) Yeah the salon I use, The Worx on Keeper Road does the 2 for 1 thing, dead handy!! A student wud be ok for colurin ur hair but whatever ya do, DO NOT LET THEM CUT IT!!! I got butchered before!! :( No if ya have shoulder lenght hair then 1 will be enough!

I've only dyed my hair at home twice trying to economise, though as it turns out the box dye colour is far closer to my natural colour (which is the aim of the process - am growing out highlights) than the semi my hairdresser did. Anyway strongly recommend getting a tint brush in Boots, makes it much much easier to apply the dye evenly and all over.

try the loreal training academy in town.. its great i go there for training courses.. really well supervised.. im a 3rd yr trainee.. if its an all over colour u cant go wrong and i think its free for a colour.. if u wanna do a diy job becarefull about permanent colour.. ive seen some serious disasters!!! the colour on the box really depends on the colour you star out with dont expect miracles from it.. ive seen ppl with really dark hair throw a blonde box dye in and come in to the salon the next day for us to fix it because its orange:P!! all reds/coppers will fadequicky! i would really reccomend u get it done professionaly!:)

btw semi will not cover grey hair at all.. just mask it if u want to cover grey u need a permanent

hey ye it would wash back to your natural ...... but a little bit different , mine never fully goes back ! ye i apply the colour after 8 weeks when my own colour starts to come through !

the semi will cover the grey but only for a short period of time like any dye it will come through ! but sure you should just give it ago , nothing ventered nothing gained :)
just do your patch test and if you do please let me know how it went :) x

What do you mean mask it? For how long does it cover it? My hair grows ridiculously fast so even if i went for a permanent, I think I'd have roots after a very short time. Ughhhh I wish I hadn't started going grey so early, it's such a pain!

Yeah I am wary of permanent colour too which is why I was just gonna go for a dark brown, but sure if im going to go to the hassle of dying it, I might as well have really cool hair! I'm interested in the mahogany colour cos my skin tone is a bit sallow and it really warms up my face. The colour in the box is gorgeous but who knows how its going to look on my hair. Need to bite the bullet I guess!
