I'm just curious to get peoples opinions on numbers of owners of a car. I'm looking at a 5 door hatchback which is being sold by the fourth owner who has had it since June '09. My initial reaction when seeing the number of owners was to run, but its only one of a few cars that fit the bill at the moment and is an automatic.

I'm obviously going to do the normal checks etc. and have someone with me at the time of viewing, but just sounding it out among the forum. If it ticks all the boxes I would intend keeping it for a while so the impact of a future sale shouldn't be a problem.

The old log book system was handy for checking previous owners and how long they owned the car. 4 owners after 8 years isn't too bad. Some people change car every year and automatics are in a league of their own - people have certain requirements that may not be long term. A small parttime dealer may have been included on the list of owners. Have the usual checks carried out though.

I remember an old log book of my brothers astra that seemed to be a manuscript of previous owners...

    them were the days....

Yeah, the automatic factor kinda throws out the normal usage I reckon, it being the unconventional thing for its class in Ireland. Its a pity they done away with the previous owners details as X mentioned, as I know i'd be ringing each one.

I'll check it out and see, at least the owner has got a fresh NCT until 2013 which is a good start.

4 previous owners on a 03 wouldn't bother me in the slightest, let the car speak for itself.

Don't worry about the owners. Its the condition/service history that are the most important IMO.

I never understood the obsession with number of owners. Once its not ridiculous like 10 or something, it really shouldnt matter.

Judge on condition versus similar models.

4 owners in 8 years is on average 1 owner every 2 years. I would see that as normal enough especially during the Celtic Tiger years.

Thanks for the opinions folks, i'm happy its a non issue. Its only an almera, so nothing too exciting and i'll let you know if i buy it.

The sale didn't happen anyway, as after arranging to view it a couple of hours later the guy rang to say it was sold. I wanted to meet him halfway to ease the distance to travel, maybe he felt the car couldn't make it, sure who knows, i'll keep an eye on motortax.ie to see if it was genuinely sold.

Here's the ad, i'll give bonus points to the eagle eyed viewer who spots whats not right about it (other than the bad spelling).

Says toyota on the tax disc?

Thats it! I asked the seller and he said the tax is out 6 months and just popped that one in in case anyone noticed while getting the NCT done etc. The neck on some people.

A 1.8 auto Almera that's 8 years old should be priced a bit lower than what he was asking, I reckon you didn't miss out to be honest.

Indeed, theres no way i'd have paid asking. He had already agreed to €3,000 over the phone, so with a wad of crisp fifty's, I was hoping to get it for €2,600 or €2,700 tops.

The 1.8's don't sell very well, i'd imagine because of the high tax for the type of car it is. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to many 5 doors about tho'.
