Taxes and Charges

Not sure if I should post this here or in the travel forum so mods please feel free to move.......

Anyway I was just looking at flights to London with Aer Lingus and Ryanair to go in March and I can't get over the difference between the "taxes and charges" fee they charge! I have no problem paying it but it seems to just be a random number!

A flight to London with EI is 9.99 with 27.99 in taxes and charges, and the return flight was 4.99 with 52.99 taxes and charges! How can there be such a difference! I couldn't find a break down of how they come to that price!
With FR they are giving me flights with no taxes and charges!!

Anyone know how the system for this works??

Airports and governments charge different tax rates?

    Its black magic.

Different airports have different departure/handling charges. Countries are the same. To add to the confusion the airline sometimes covers some or all of the charges to offer very low fares to incentivise travel.

As regards the difference in charges between leaving Dublin and leaving Heathrow, looking at a flight on flybmi.com where they break down the taxes and charges you can see the following:

    1) Heathrow has higher airport charges than Dublin - EUR 14.40 -v- EUR 7.70
    2) UK Airport departure tax is higher than Irish - EUR 21.01 -v- EUR 10.00

The balance is probably fuel surcharges.

Aer Lingus may have higher costs at LHR than bmi.

As far as Ryanair are concerned they are paying your charges - a promotion.
