    Hi folks,

I'm considering a return to study and I'm hoping some of you can help answer some questions I have.

    1. I'm interested in the TSM options at TCD, and would like to combine World Religions and Theology with Ancient History and Archaeology. If I were to do just World Religions and Theology I understand that there may be 12-17 hours of class/lectures per week in the first year. If I combined this with Ancient History and Archaeology, how much more class/lecture time would there be per week? Does this increase in subsequent years or stay roughly the same? I was hoping maybe another student of this combination could give me a fairly good idea of this, or a TSM student of other combinations could give me a rough idea.

    2. If I succeed in getting a place on the course I'll be returning as a mature student and have been looking at what funding options there are. Considering my location and subject interest I'm not aware of any scholarships that would be open to me. So, I think all I would be eligible for would be the non-adjacent rate HEA/Local Authority / VEC maintenance grant. Or are there additional options?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance. :)

With TSM you're taking half(ish) of the courses you'd be taking in a particular subject if you were doing single honors - so it's roughly the same number of hours (though some subjects have more contact hours than others). 12-17 hrs sounds about right for many first year artsy courses though.

It depends on whether or not you hold a previous qualification. As a rule when you're attending a university you apply to the county or city council, not the VEC. Watch out for the BTEA though, if you don't know what you're doing they'll completely shaft you. If you hold a previous qualification at the same level then you're pretty much screwed financing wise. Irish government tends to give you one bite at the apple only I'm afraid. Check out www.studentfinance.ie, it's pretty awesome. Ask in the SU, they're meant to do grants or maybe the admissions office. Don't ask the social welfare office though, my sister went there and she says they haven't a clue about student financing.

Thanks Claire. Do you know if this increases much in subsequent years?

Thanks Ahoy. I'm not in receipt of any benefits so I won't be going anywhere near Welfare - I know exactly what they are like. I'm working at the moment and will have to reduce that drastically if not pack it in for study. I have gone to third level previously but did not complete my course. I think as a mature student I may be eligible for a grant under the 'second chance' provisions. I've been on studentfinance.ie - a great site indeed. I just wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else I was missing.
