    Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm just wondering where is the best area to rent a house and which areas/ landlords to avoid. Any advice and shared experience would be helpful. :)

Just avoid Amhra House, I'll say no more!

Donegan Court is another one to avoid apparantly. You hear nothing but bad things about the place.

Moyola Park is very near the commerce/nursing buildings (and college in general I suppose).
Laurel Park is a little further but still walking distance.

avoid any landlords who are not registered with ptrb and I would also avoid galway accommodation agency and anywhere else that asks you for a year long lease. you will know if someone is registered with the ptrb because they will ask you to sign a form registering you as the tenant in that house. There may be some good landlords that are not registered but I think its a good sign of where they stand and whether they can be trusted or not.

You can also check the PRTB website and see if a particular property is registered or not with them - that's the quickest and easiest way. It's definitely a good idea to avoid landlords who aren't registered - it's illegal to not register tenancies (unless the landlord lives with you plus some other conditions which you can find on the PRTB website). In my experience such landlords are chancers who may try and mess you about with your deposit when you move out.

Moyola park is a very nice and quiet area, yet close enough to the college to leave at 9am for a 9.10am lecture. Rent is also very reasonable (for me at least)

My only regret is not being closer to town. It takes guts of 25 mins to get to Eyre Sq. but that's not a huge problem.

I'm staying in Corrib Park which is near both Moyola and Laurel Park. Rent is pretty reasonable and its quite near to the college, less than 10 minutes really. The disadvantages in my opinion are that town is quite far away, a little under 25 mins for me, and also that its too quiet for me. If your a first year I would say Student Accommodation is better.

On the upside, you are closer to Dunnes/Aldi westside, estate is cleaner than most first year student places, quieter too.

Yup I agree with you there. Also there is a bus stop and a taxi rank right across the road which is handy. The bus is only 1.60 too :)

I do however think that a first year should (unless moving in with people they already know) stay in student accommodation because it is a lot easier to get to know people and make friends.
