Dr speciality for treating Lyme disease?

    Buddy of mine has Lyme disease. Diagnosed a few years ago. What Consultant speciality would be the best to go and see about the disease. Gp does not really know. Would a Haemotologist or general physician be the best to go to....

    If they were diagnosed a few years ago, they would have Chronic Lyme Disease or Late Lyme Disease (presuming they had a course of antibiotics at some stage). Some doctors who would treat acute Lyme Disease but have a different view of Chronic Lyme Disease.

    at this stage it would be chronic...
    He got the tick bite here in ireland while shooting, and was living in UK at the time. He was told by consultant in UK he had ME for years. His mother read an article in paper one sunday in UK, and showed it to him. Person there had same signs/symptoms etc and eventually found a Dr, that took his bloods to sent them to USA, and they cam back positive. but as he had it for years, not sure who to go to now. He is living in Ireland now

    I have ME but have not gone down this line of treatment so am not an expert so hopefully other people may respond.

    My general impression from knowing people with an ME diagnosis (at one stage - that's how I know them) who have gone looking for treatment in Ireland along those lines is that they have found it frustrating. Generally they have had to go abroad if they wanted drug treatment.

    Dr Jemsek, Lyme guru is coming to ireland to do a talk at Clontarf castle in June, yay! In their March newsletter the jemsek clinic mentioned the conference & also did an interview with Irish lyme sufferer Niall.

    In response to the original question sadly getting treated for chronic/late stage lyme can be a challenge but getting treated for early lyme is equally hard as often doctors don't recognise it as a problem. We're trying hard to rectify that by writing to the Department of Health & requesting meetings with the HPSC. Attitudes are changing slowly but patients are still being forced to travel overseas for assistance & knowledge from Lyme disease specialists. This is frustrating for folks who are either too ill to travel or who cannot afford to travel due to loss of earnings caused by the debilitating symptoms.     Take care everyone this spring / summer, Lyme carrying ticks are particularly bad in the West of Ireland (: I imagine that the warm & wet Winter will be perfect condition for ticks to increase their population! :(
