    Hi there

My boyfriend is travelling to New Zealand soon and I wanted to get him a few things to keep him occupied/entertained on the journey. He will be bringing his laptop and iPhone so will have movies and tv shows loaded onto those. Any other suggestions would be great though!

    Thanks

A sleep aid of some sort can come in handy - nothing passes the time like sleep

I fly alot with work long haul and sleeping is the easiest way to get through them. Ipod is grand for a few hours until ya get bored listening. If the airline doesnt have laptop power (which is most of them) then this wont be useful for too long. Most likely the plane will have alot of entertainment if with one of the better airlines.

A good book or puzzle book is good to enduce sleep :).

Xanax. You need a prescription of course, but it's well worth a visit to your GP. turns a long haul flight into a teleportation

obviously this comment wont go down well but drugging yourself before you go on a flight. i know its exceedingly rare but some flights do have problems where you need an emergency landing. i for one wouldnt like to be drugged out of it in that kind of situation

Drugs are not an option in this case anyway (sports drug testing etc)
So far I'm thinking I need to get a Rescue Remedy (or something equally natural that might help with sleep) travel pillow, ear plugs, good book, good movies and music on iPod...
    Am I missing anything!

thats about it - flying long haul is not nice , its simple as that but lets face it - the experiences on the other side of the flight are well worth it

i find travel scrabble absolutely fantastic - if your travelling with someone then play two games = two hours

My wife and I used to take regular long haul flights 12 plus hours. Our strategy eas a half grain of valium each after the meal. Your out like a light but when you have to wake your not groggy and there's no hangover. I'm afraid I don't have a clue if thats on a banned list.

I have done the Ireland to NZ flight direct quite a few times.
I find leaving Ireland in the evening reaching NZ in the morning the best, though my other half says leaving Ireland in the morning is best.
EAR PLUGS and neck pillow and maybe a good book.
But I sleep well anywhere. I find watching a few movies, on the inflight entertainment, playing a few video games, a few drinks and Im grand!
I usually try to get a seat where there is no-one sitting behind me so I can stretch back with out distubing anyone, but I have short legs and dont need to squeeze my knees into the plane. Though I would recomend avoiding Ethihad Airways as I Did have to squeeze the legs with them! Singapore Air is brilliant and the Singapore Slings are great for putting me to sleep!!!!!! I also recommend limiting the amount of stuff you carry-on teh flight, you only have to drag it around airports and remember it all! Most Asian Airports have lounges you can higher by the hour; A good shower and an hours nap lying down are fantastic for reviving the weary traveller and beating the jet lag!!! :D

Get a flight on the A380 if you can, I flew 14.5hours from Sydney to LA with Qantas on the A380 and it flew by and I even managed to get about 3 hours sleep in the middle of the flight. The aircraft is so quite and economy is slightly spacier than some of the alternatives.

I then flew 10 hours from LAX to Heathrow with British Airways on the 747 in what could be best compared as hellish conditions as I found it cramped compared to the A380.

I had been awake for about 24 hours before the flight and my schedule went like this:

The previous day we had spent seeing Las Vegas and then up until 5am in the bars and clubs, back to the hotel room to listen to GAA on the internet, left for McCarran and South West at 8.30, couldn't eat upset stomach. South West flight cancelled had to wait an hour for the next one, pushing us tight at LAX.

Got to LAX and the BA flight was delayed by an hour, 10.5 hours later we landed in Heathrow and not one wink of sleep did I get in the cramped seats and the VOD was brutal. Got Aer Lingus home and it was almost 40 hours since I last slept, collapsed into my own bed and slept for the next two days almost! Although as a result of extreme fatigue I had absolutely no jet lag.

I flew on the Singapore Air A380 from Heathrow to Singapore, didnt think it was really that much better than SA other planes. Though I hear Boeing are about to release a plane that will wipe the A380 out of the skys. Have never flowen through the US always comes up more expensive for some reason. I rank SA as the best I managed to get from Dublin to Auckland with them in 24 hours once! Just enough time in Singapore to grab duty free and a quick ciggy, no shower though! Usually would be in Singapore for about three hours but due to weather in Heathrow we were delayed getting out. I tell ya I got the best 6am Beer, Steak and Kidney Pie and a smoke in Auckland Domestic Terminal that I had ever had in my life after that flight! (Well it ended up being 6 beers cause I had to wait another 4 hours for a domestic flight home!)

Valium--deck of cards----iphone----headphones(noise reduction ones if you have them)----reading material.

If you can't take the valium, then see how much vodka you can drink in an hour...that should do the trick :)

Book a seat in the very last row at the side. The sides generally don't have a back panel behind them, so you can put the seat back quite far without disturbing others.
Maybe a glass of vino might help with the sleep?

Yeah, neck pillow and a couple of good books.

    Definitely agree here!
The other handy thing to these rows is you can put your cabin bag behind you in easy reach! and avoid having to fight for space in the hold above the seats!
