Just a thought, If I were to buy a toyota hilux crewcab as a commercial and was forced to tax it privately, as I do not have a revenue registration number, would the car be classed as commercial still, or private? Would it still have to be DOE'd every year or would it revert to being NCT'd every 2 years?

    Thanks.

Depending on the year of registration you will be paying between 1050 (emissions based) and 1380 in motor tax.

The vehicle would be classed as private and would need to be NCT's not DOE'd.

Thanks for that, but how is the change in class from commercial to private made? Is it something that can be done easily and knowing how this country works, what would it cost???

The Hilux would be around 05

    Thanks

I believe Pkiernan is spot on - however it does not seem to stop people without the RC reg number trying to register them as commercial or import them for €50.00.

What's an RC number? And the car is Irish already, i'm not importing anything, just changing from commercial to private.

Got a partial answer from Galways Tax Office:

A goods vehicle, i.e. without seats in the back of the vehicle, must be used only for carrying goods in the course of a trade or business – in order to tax a vehicle at goods rate, you must sign a Declaration confirming that you will use it only for this purpose and describe the nature of your trade / business and the related revenue registration number. The latter may be your PPS No or a Company Registration No depending on the nature of your employment, i.e. employee / self-employed or employer.

A goods vehicle which has seats in the back (up to 6 seats max) is called a crew cab and must be used only for carrying goods and employees in the course of a business. Therefore, in this case, the Revenue Registration Number would need to be a Company Registration No since the vehicle is designed to carry employees. A separate declaration regarding usage of crew cabs must be signed by the owner, i.e. confirming use for carrying of goods / employees and giving nature of trade or business and its related tax number.

In any case, it is a matter for the vehicle owner to consider their usage of the vehicle and decide if they can complete the Declaration Form. If they cannot, the only other option open to them from a motor tax point of view is to tax it at the private rate – this will be based on the cc of the vehicle for pre 2008 vehicles and on carbon emissions bands for post 2008 vehicles. The owner should check with their Insurance Company separately to ensure their cover continues to meet their needs.

The owner can declare the change of use on a Change of Particulars Form which can also be used to tax the vehicle – this is Form RF111 (attached for your information). As the testing of vehicles is based on body type, the vehicle would continue to be subject to DoE rather than NCT testing.

Hope this information is of some help – the motor tax rates for private vehicles are attached if you wish to check applicable rates

    Regards

A commercial vehicle must be DOE'd annually regardless of tax class(commercial or private)

    Thats great to know!

The DOE is usually a piece of cake to pass compared to the NCT, but it is an annual test instead of every 2 years.

The DOE test is basically the same as the NCT test, in fact the new manual for LGV DOE test's is based on the NCT manual with a few commercial specific alterations/additions.

Sorry Hal - RC is just short for revenue commissioners.
