Whats the story with Limerick County Golf Club? Is it closed down for good or is it going to reopen at a later stage?

Played it a few times last year, nice layout but hardly anyone on the course, very little maintenance done. Hopefully it will be up and running again sometime soon.

Very sad to see that... but did know it was coming... I started playing last June and not being a member anywhere spent a lot of time out there... the green fees were cheap ..15 Euro.. and it was always quiet so if I was playing on my own no one could see some of my embarrassing snap hooks.....
This was actually quite a nice course with some great holes.. a lot of up and down on the front nine but I liked that.. great view from the tee box on the 9th where you could see half of Limerick. Also nice amount of water hazards on the back nine... A real pity.

Is the driving range gone too?

According to the website it closed down last week as well... leaves a gap for a decent range in Limerick now...

Yup, a pity cos that was a great set-up. Nearest one due south is Charleville, not too sure of the city.

There is a driving range in Coonagh.... but it is not great and very soft old range balls.

Driving range at Adare Manor Hotel course (could be pricey)

Also driving range at Newcastle West Golf Club.

As you say there may be an opening in the market for a farmer with a big field and a cow shed:)

Can you just go use the driving range in Adare Manor.... I played there once last year and saw it but I thought it was just for members.....

I don't see why not, the facilities are excellent (Natural Turf) Probably have to pay over the odds. Best thing to do is give them a ring, even they cannot afford to turn away money!!

I believe Donal McSweeney is building a state of the art driving range and acadamy in Annacotty. It will be up and running later this year at a cost of a few million Euro. The plans are with Limerick Co Co. Can't wait.

    Good news NotSoDaft.
Just had a look at the plans here - http://www.lcc.ie/ePlan/InternetEnquiry/rpt_ViewApplicDetails.asp?validFileNum=1&app_num_file=101195 (Go to "View related documents").
Looks like there might be a short game practice area on the plans too (or a putting green at least).

How good is that.... I live in Annacotty.... my wife will be delighted:)

Im pretty sure that Donal wont actually own it, he will just be the teaching pro there. There is somebody else that is financing and building it. Unless that has changed since the new year.

I was told Donal McSweeney owned it. I will check and I will know tomorrow.

Hey Viking - you make the plunge and join a club yet ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Munster Sports Nutrition

That is good news, nice to have somewhere to practice during the winter months when a lot of the parkland courses are soggy!!

I have not looked at the plans but hopefully there will be no major delays with PP or other obsticals.

BTW the driving range at Adare Manor hotel course is only open to members and golfers playing the course on the day.

Anybody know when construction of the driving range in Annacotty is going to start?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 NotSoDaft

Yea, Donal McSweeney will be running the range. I don't know who owns it (some local people). I was told it will be open later this year.

Oh oh oh not everybody wants a driving range in Annacotty. Barbara Hackett from the Coonagh driving range has objected to Donal McSweeney's proposed driving range in Annacotty. Wait and see..........................

lol, i suppose no competition is good competition as far as she is concerned.
I cant see there being any problems in this going ahead tbh.

Have to agree, what this country needs is greater competition. I suspect that this application will be welcomed given all the commercial enterprises going out of business around the limerick area.

I heard last weekend the planning has gone through for this....?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,431 ✭✭✭dvemail

I cant see there being any problems unless the lad financing the whole thing pulls out.

Barbera Hackett's objection covered here. Apparently we don't need anymore because we have 4 ranges within a 25 mile radius of Limerick city

Barbera Need's To Knuckle Down! She's Just Afraid Of A New Modern Golf Range! It Would Be More In Her Line To Invest Some Money Into That Dump Out In Coonagh!

True, Donal McSweeney ran a good set up in Limerick County and is a PGA professional. Limerick needs a good Golf Range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭Aesop

According to the link below the application by Donal has been refused

Hope that isnt true, Limerick really needs another range because lets be honest
    Coonagh aint very good.

Ya would love this to happen. nice and near for me. Looks like its been appealed. hopefully it will be granted. Seems the reason it was rejected was that the road was too small and no footpaths http://www.lcc.ie/idocsweb/ViewFiles.aspx?docid=903778&format=jpeg

Front page of this weeks Limerick Post:

    http://www.limerickpost.ie/digital/2011/2011-06-25/

So the constant rumours about the Garda Social Club trying to buy Limerick County Golf Club (at the right price) were true and they were the only bidder in the open tender process. Unfortunately, the liquidators have not accepted their offer.

I am stunned and appalled at this decision. Obviously the liquidators want a better price than the Garda are prepared to offer and are trying to play hardball. I can't see the receivers winning that contest any time soon. The Garda have been waiting patiently for over 3 years (according to ex members) and will continue to do so until the liquidators see sense. Why wouldn't they? The are the only viable option for this club and everyone knows it.

Meantime, what is a lovely course just outside the city falls further into disrepair and is unavailable to the golfers of this region. Not to mention all the jobs that would be instantly recreated for this area (office, bar, restaurant, range, greenkeeping etc.). I really hope some resolution can be found sooner rather than later and the accountants who made this decision could start to see the bigger picture, but I'm not holding my breath!

    Rant over.

A decision will have to be made on this soon. If they keep playing hardball the effort required to get it back to a reasonable standard will turn any possible investors off and they'll end up getting nothing at all.

Passed it there the other day, sorry state of affairs. The sooner they sell it off,the better.
Is it true the sewerage system there isn't being maintained? Hopefully not.

A friend of mine who was a greenkeeper there told me about the garda social club trying to buy it about 2 years ago, for some reason the committee wanted to run the club into the ground, haven't a clue why, in the end the bank came in and repossessed a lot of the equipment there as all of the greens were diseased because they didn't have the money to treat them.

The longer this goes on the more money the guards will have to pay to fix it up so of course they will be taking that into consideration and therefore the price will be reducing............

Terrible shame if the course cant be saved, probably my favourite to play after Adare Manor & Ballybunion. Hopefully something can be resolved as I found the driving range very handy as well, if I want to use a range now I have to go to NCW which isnt as good, or Coonagh which is a bit far for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Played a lot of golf on the course and while it wasnt very good golf at times the course was brilliant. Plenty of really tough holes and the greens were really nice. The main downside of the course was the 18th and the way it was ruined by the the owners of the houses.

Tell yee what lads, if i win the Euromillions tonight ill buy it.:D

Said I'd post here rather than starting a new one.

I heard rumblings that something is happening with this course again. Last I had heard was that the land was bought for agricultural purposes and that was that. But in recent days I heard rumours that Donal McSweeney was doing something out there again. Has anyone else heard likewise?
