    I've always wondered about this.

Why did NUIG change from UCG, but UCC and UCD didn't??

I've always wondered why people can't use apostrophes correctly.

Just because they didn't want to. UCC and UCD were meant to become NUI Cork and NUI Dublin respectively, however they did not want to change their names so only NUI Galway and NUI Maynooth changed to NUI.

As well as I remember, with the introduction of the NUI each university was permitted to take two names, NUI ___, and another name of thier choice that represents the university. Dublin and Cork choose to retain UCD and UCC respectively, whereas Galway choose University of Galway and even created material around this (there is a calendar with the UG branding on it, although very rare). However there was a problem, and UG was not permitted, by the time this was discovered they could not revert to UCG and so became NUI Galway.

Interesting. I never knew about the "University of Galway" bit. It's a pity they don't go back to UCG. The name "NUI Galway" is a pet hate of mine. In particular the new branding and how much they must have spent on the fecking thing! (I'd love to see the invoices from the graphic designers). Their insistance on the "brand" being NUI Galway (rather than the full title) carries little meaning beyond Ireland. People would look at "NUI" and wonder what an NUI was... At least with "University College Galway" or the full NUI title, it's blatantly obvious what the function of the institute is! Grrr! :)

It just occured to me, it's not a calender with University of Galway, it's the annual Christmas card. I've never seen it myself but it would be worth trying to track it down, it should be 1997, perhaps the library have a copy (I would do this myself but I'm away from Galway).

The Full NUI title is also confusing for people internationally, the address becomes: 'National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland', which feels wrong.

Hehe, actually the full address becomes even worse...

    National University of Ireland, Galway,
    University Road,
    Galway,
    Ireland.

Edit: There should be a "Bring back UCG" movement! I remember when I started in Galway, I think it was the SU or SIN website (or maybe some Soc?) that had a footer reading: "NUIG - pronounced you-see-gee"

Given that the NUI umbrella group is now effectively defunct, it mightn't be a bad time to revert to UCG. Aside from the money spent on rebranding everything with that stupid new logo a couple of years ago.

Internationally people have no idea what this 'NUI' thing is. UCG was far better as it fit in with the american system, e.g. UCLA etc. Doubt they'll be changing it back anytime soon, would cost a fortune in terms of rebranding.

As it stands, the NUI has not been disbanded and no further action was taken after the proposition was made to then Minister for Education & Science Mr. Bat O' Keefe. After the Cabinet Reshuffle, there was no more talk of it.

I've never met anyone who thought NUI was better than UCG. Lots of people still call it UCG, particularly older specimens.

I imagine it cost them a fair bit to change to NUIG, and then even more when they introduced that awful new logo and colour scheme (what genius decided to ditch the traditional Galway maroon for the zany purple blue and green that have nothing to do with anything?).

I actually know one of the people behind the rebranding. Didn't tell her that pretty much everyone I met, myself included, doesn't like it though.

I detest "NUIG", it always reminds me of a chewy sweet!! :pac:

NUI Maynooth going that direction made sense, the 1997 Universities Act finally split the University from St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, and gave it full autonomy as an independent university within the NUI.

Why in the name of jaysus UCG changed though I will never understand!

When the universities Act was passed in 1997 Maynooth automatically became NUI Maynooth, UCG UCC & UCD had the option to apply to become NUI............. respectivly, UCG under Prof. Fotrell assuming that the others would do likewise applied for the name change. The others never did. The reason put out at the time was to differenciate the NUI's from UL & DCU.

It was widely recognised as a complete failure and privately college authorities at the top level wish they could go back. Unfortunately no one with any power has tried to take the issue on as the alumni association is a joke now that the University shut down the original independent alumni association Cumann Ceimite na Gaillimhe so that they could control the new one. However with all the rebranding one off the best momento an alumnist of UCG could have was lost, the old UCG graduates ring we may not be able to change the name but we have to bring back the ring they look amazing.

Call me cynical but I doubt if you'd be able to get students motivated enough to organise a campaign to bring a ring back.

When I was studying abroad, I was listed as a student of the National University of Ireland. Strange enough system, as myself and Maynooth students were deemed students of the same university.

The idea of bringing the ring back is an issue for alumni to take up, since students cant get the ring until they graduate and become alumni!!!

Also people said that students wouldn't organise a campaign to bring back the old UCG college scarf and they did back in 20002/03 right at the height of celtic tiger student ambivilence!!!

It's a branding thing. People outside of Ireland know the cities Cork and Dublin, so to hear someone went to UCC or UCD is not a problem. If you go to America and tell them you have a degree from the University of Galway or the University of Maynooth, they may never have heard of these places (especially Maynooth), and so the National University of Ireland brand is extremely important.

As far as I know, it costs NUIG and NUIM a lot of money to retain the NUI title from year to year.

Was the NUI ever fully dismantled?

I've always hated the NUIG name. UCG just makes more sense and sounds better. Since i'm only in 2nd year most people I know call it NUIG. Sadly people will probably forget about UCG in a few years time :(

lol what's all this about, graduates used to get given UCG rings? That sounds pretty tacky... a nice pen or something would be sweet but what sort of berk wears a university ring? Probably the ones who hang their degrees on the wall and wear NUIG hoodies.
