Can anybody educate me on using other peoples images on a personal blog?

For example if im talking about sombody or something on the blog, google an image of them and use it in the post. I believe the done thing is to provide a link to the photographer or site you got the images from and acknowlege it? Is this enough to stop people throwing tantrums over copyright theft etc? They're freely available on google after all...

As i said its a personal blog, adsense and affiliate links aside, and Im not claming the photographs to be my own and its quite clear tha time not.

    Any advice appreciated

    Thanks

Freely available to look at online doesn't mean freely available to use. Where possible, get the photographers or original site's permission.

Some photographers can get very testy about this.

As a courtesy, you should accredit the photograph. It's not a legal defence but at least you're tipping your hat to the content owner. Have a look at what thejournal.ie are doing. They seem to use photos from a mix of sources.

It also depends what the photo is. If it's say a musician or band, you'll quickly see what photos are out there as publicity shots and there shouldn't be a problem in using them.
