Car stuck in gear

The gf's car (106) is stuck in second gear! The gearstick will not budge out of it! The car has given no clutch or gearbox related problems before! My first thought was a gear linkage that might have popped out?? Any ideas?

This happened me once or twice in the cold weather.

I was told by a mechanic that the gearbox was on the way out. He wasnt sure if it was related to the car stuck in gear or if this was purely coincidental based on the weather.

It didnt sound "crunching" when you put it in gear previously?

Try rocking the car backwards and forwards with someone in the car shifting gear (foot off clutch while doing this)
