Hi, I was just wondering if you get into General Service with the PDF what can you do regards specialist training with say explosives or medical training? What has to happen before you can do it? Do you have to apply for a course? Or wait to be offered?
Also, do you choose which barracks your stationed in, or are you just told?
    Thanks.

What kind of explosives training are you thinking of?

You have to do a course to serve in Med Coy, the course is 16 weeks long and on returning to your Unit you'll be posted to Med Coy.

You apply for the course when it's advertised in your Unit, no guarantee you'll get it though.

As for barracks, you'll get a chance to express a preference with regards to the Unit you'd like to go to once you finish training but there's no guarantee you'll go there. Manpower needs in the Brigade take precedence over a Recruit's preferred option.

Well, I dont really know specifically. I didnt think there were different types. I just thought it would be explosives in general.:o What different kinds are there?

Thanks for the info on the medical training and location too.

All courses are posted at unit level, with there min reqs.

You can apply, along with all others.

Corps specific training tends to be sorted after recruit training IME,

ie the Okes that couldn't march ended up in the Medical Corps, the thickest tended to be targeted by the PA (military police) etc

Basically if you get in, you'll find a bed.

As an Infantry Soldier you'll eventually be allowed blow the sh1t out of part of Wicklow with either a grenade, mortar or anti-tank weapon.

Explosives (as in C4 etc) is left for the Engineers & some of the Ordnance lads. You'll get into these nits only if you get a specialist course or you already have a skill/trade from civvie street that you can use e.g. electrician, carpenter etc.
