Sorry if this is in wrong section.

I am thinking of buying a commerical i.e. landcruiser amazon or patrol. Has anyone used these as weekend campers i.e. basically something to sleep in with surfboard included & other bits & pieces.

    Cheers

Have used a crew cab transporter in the past for weekend camping trips, stopped twice by
customs asking why was I using a commercial at weekend, had tools in back and answered that we provide a 24 hour countrywide service and when I get tired driving I sleep in the back. From what I have recently read on forums they seem to have
tightened up a lot on the use of commercials for private/leisure use.

Unless you can prove you need it for business use you might find it hard to tax.
I have a friend that has always driven vans for the same reason as you, he recently changed vans and has found it extremely difficult to tax the new one.

Ignoring the tax implications for now, you'd find kipping in the back of it a bit impractical. Oz-tents do some nice tents to go with 4x4s that can be put up quickly and are better than grovelling around in you normal cheap pop up tent.

Don't get too carried away, I need a trailer to cart my gear to shows, does have a beer fridge in it though :D

Plenty of room for a semi-decent kip in a commercial landcruiser.

BUT - bring a good sleeping bag, as they get very cold unless you want to keep the engine ticking over.

you can fit a normal double matress in the back of a lwb pajero. youll need to make a base for it above the wheel arches though.

Living out of the back of one is ok for a fit surfer dude I suppose, wouldn't want to do it myself, I'm too creaky in the mornings :o
