Timelessness

Something interesting I notice whenever I watch 'Reeling In The Years' or any old archive footage is how ridiculous people look. Hair, fashion sense, music taste, dancing etc. all seem to be questionable in most time eras I've seen on TV. While, of course, not indicative of the entire population, many are seen sporting ensembles that would now be considered absolutely outlandish!

And it got me thinking, when I look back at photos or videos of myself in ten/twenty years time, will I have these feelings about myself and the environment I grew up in too?

How do we shift our psyche in such a way that trends and styles are deemed ludicrous in hindsight? What's the trick to timelessness?

    Play of light
    A photograph
The way I used to be
    Some half-forgotten stranger
Doesn't mean that much to me

    That's life....

You've got to choose your look when you're about fourteen and stick with it.

Future proof your face by always sporting one sideburn.

The more impractical the fashion the more stupid it looks when it dates.
Of course, that doesn't explain ties.

This thread should really be in Fashion & Appearance.

The key to timelessness is to buy classics in good quality that never date.

I have noticed that most men will try to always wear what was in fashion when they were in school. Most Women seem to adapt much better to new fashion trends.

I was thinking about much the same thing recently and you know what I've noticed - people from the 50s, you can clearly see and differentiate between them and people from the 60s, likewise there is a huge difference between them and people from the 70s, and the 80s has a fashion all to itself.

However, once you get to the 90s and 00s, there's no real difference between that and today. Watching 15-20 year old TV shows, the constant shifting tides of fashion seem to have gotten stuck, most of the clothes and fashions from the early 90s onwards would not look at all outlandish walking down the street today.

Odd little note there I guess.

The 80's is well known for big hair, shoulder pads and ridiculous fashion in general but now looking back on videos and photos from the 90's, its also starting to get its own unique dated look.

Ah, but you see, ties are practical! A tie, worn properly, can seal the gap made in the open space of the collar, thus keeping your chest warm.

The 90's were fecking terrible. Massive influx of gay-like boy bands with their horrible horrible style that took off like wildfire (Bleached hair/blonde highlights/vests and other crap I cant even name) and not to mention the crap music that came out which makes me cringe.

Stop reading 'fashion' magazines and develop some taste. Style never goes out of fashion.
