Squealing noise

    Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone might know what this problem is.

I have a 04 Corolla that is making an intermittent squealing noise when driving. It's been happening for a few months now, and I could drive 50 miles with nothing, and then all of a sudden it will just start squealing.

When I first heard it I presumed it was the brake pads wearing, particularly because as soon as I even pressed the brake pedal the noise stops. So I brought it to the garage, got it checked and had the front pads replaced. Sadly it has continued and I have had it checked since by two seperate mechanics, apparently all pads and discs are in perfect working order and annoyingly the noise hasn't manifested itself when either mechanic gave it a test drive. One of the mechanics greased the back of the pads but that didn't work either.

That was just before all the snowy weather so I haven't had a chance to get it looked at since but it's still happening. Drove for roughly 80 miles with it squealing last night. I presume it's something to do with the brakes because when I even lean on the brakes it stops, then starts again as soon as I let go of the pedal. Anyone have any ideas?

Brakes should only really squeal when you're applying them. Squealing while driving sounds like aux belts to me. I'm having a similar problem on cold start-up.

Does it squeal in your driveway when revving the engine. Next time it starts squealing, pull over, pop the bonnet and have a look at the belts.

If the garage said your brakes are fine, then the belts are really the only other thing I can think of.

It could be belts but I'm wondering why it seems to stop when braking or turning.

Often if I'm doing a short journey it might not squeal at all. For example I was driving west from Dublin last night. No noise from the city centre for the first 20 minutes or so. It started around Palmerstown then it squealed all the way to Mullingar. It seemed to stop when I hit a bit of a bump (small resurfaced section) on the dual carriageway. It also seems to stop when I'm going around a bend in one direction either left/right - the direction that 'stops it' varies too - one day all left turns stop it, another right turns.

That all sounds bizarre but it's exactly what's happening.
