hey lads, I am looking at getting a night vision scope have been reading a bit about them lately, was wondering if anyone has used them, what brand they have and what they thought of them or are they a waste of time? some guys seem to be getting great results with them from what im reading in the magazines.

night vision scope needs authorization from your super to have mounted on your rifle and you would need a good reason to get it.

There is a tick box on the FCA1 form for "Sights/Other" in section 3.2 labeled Accessories (also contains the silencer tick box).

The important thing to remember, is, that permission is needed from the Gardaí for any night vision device which can be attached to a rifle. Be that a dedicated night vision rifle scope, or an add on night vision device which can be attached to a rifle scope.

Thanks lads good to know! wasnt aware that you needed authorization to get one, dont know if wanting to shoot lamp shy foxes would be seen as sufficant reason for having one! but what reason would be acceptable in this case?

I don't know anyone who's got one so can't say. If I had the spare cash I'd give it a go to find out myself tbh.

its been asked a few times before, dont think any1 on here has one! just from what iv read here the only people using them are NPWS rangers. your reason for wanting one is yours, if you have a problem with lamp shy foxes put it down as your reason, all they can say is no and it wont cost you anything to to send in an application. the lamp shy ones should be your challenge lad to yourself!

Be prepared to lump down about 2k upwards for anything approaching decent NV scope equipment, which is appx Gen3 or Gen 2A at the least.
Some of the stuff out there is just dire for the prices asked of it.:(

I had sights/Other ticked when I applied. According to the local FO its not a problem. There is just no hope in hell i can afford one.

That all depends on your expectation of the technology, and whether you go the dedicated scope or add on route. You can get perfectly good add on digital NV units for small money second hand, £300 and upwards. They are regularly offered for sale on different forums.
