SDHC Cards

    Hey everyone,

I recently filled up the storage on my Wii and I'm going to buy a SDHC card to store my Wiiware and VC games on. I was just wondering what size and speed card should I get? I was thinking 8gb should last me awhile, not to mention it should be relatively cheap compared to the 16 and 32 gb ones, but I'm unsure what speed I'll need for the games to run smoothly as I'll be playing them from the card. Any suggestions as to what I'll need would be greatly appreciated. I'd also like to hear what you use and what has/hasn't work for you.

    Cheers

Get an external hard drive, an SDHC is only good for transportable things :P

I already own an external hard drive, and as far as I know they aren't compatible with the Wii without hacking it, only SD cards are.

I have a wii which is not hacked, use a crappy 8gb class 4 that I haven't had an issue with.

Speed of card is not an issue as the Wii doesn't actually play it directly from SD-card.

It copies it to the internal 512MB NAND-Flash before execution and deletes it automatically when loading a different game either from the SD card or the main console.*

tbh youre far better off hacking the wii, it gives you so much more in terms of capabilities. the stuff its able to do that nintendo left out is ridiculous

im not for one second suggesting you use it for backups, but instead for the wealth of excellent homebrew applications available for it. making it homebrew capable doesnt actually make it able to play backups anyway, that involves a few extra steps

What did Nintendo leave out? Its still only going to play the same games, in the same way isn't it? Most people probably got their wii to play games, its memory doesn't seem to be conducive to do much more with it. I may be missing a trick though and would be grateful for homebrew must haves.

wiiMC plays more video types than the ps3 manages, which is good

geckoOS lets you make the system multiregion so you can play games that werent released over here, or games you've bought from the states

it also lets you use emulators of old systems like the snes and mega drive, now that's a grey area since a lot of the titles are available from virtual console, but plenty of my favourites arent and i do like the occasional bash of super international cricket every now and then

there's really loads of stuff, and everyones gonna find something different, but the above ones are the main ones. for me anyway its mostly the first 2. the wii is small and silent so makes a great media player, assuming you dont mind the fact that it's not HD. theres way more info on legal homebrew apps over here http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_applications

the wii uses a dvd drive, yet for some reason the wii cant play dvd's.

homebrew hacked it ages for the simple ability to play dvd's pure easy to do, need to hack it again as i had a system update but defo a fan of hacking the wii makes it much nicer to use

check out the modding forum over here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=528 if you've got any questions. its very easy to do though, depending on the official firmware on the wii

I have looked there numerous times for DS related stuff, goodness knows why I haven't done anything with my wii, will do now, cheers again.

Well this thread certainly went off topic fairly quickly:). I don't really have any interest in hacking my Wii Helix, mainly because the only thing I want it for is playing games, I use my PC for everything else, plus I have no experience in the matter and don't want to risk messing it up. Thanks for the info though, maybe I'll change my mind in the future.

Thanks for answering the question dooferoaks, it's good to know they don't play from the card. Do you think a class 2 card (I think that's the slowest SDHC card) would be fine for the coping process in the beginning, I don't want to have to wait ages every time I play a different game. Thanks.
