I know that you have to hold a rigid licence before you can get an artic licence. does anybody know how long you have to hold the rigid licence for before you can get the artic licence, and do you have to be activley driving a rigid for this time?

You can apply for the Artic as soon as you pass your Rigid test. No you don't have to be actively driving the Rigid for any amount of time in order to take the test.

Just make sure your up to the standard when you apply for your test as the Artic waiting list is only a few weeks.

Nice one. I know in the Uk you have to have a rigid for 6 months before you can apply for the artic. I actually thought it was longer over here.

Are you a truck driver? I was thinking of heading over to the UK to look for some work. is there any work in Ireland at the moment trucking? I know things are bad. I'm in canada at the moment and just looking to get 2 years experience trucking before i come back over here, so i'm not chasing the big money just want to get some experience.

Nope not a truck driver although I have a Rigid licence that I never use! There is a very small amount of truck driving around if you have the experience preferably 2 years as a Artic Driver.

To be honest you'd be wasting your time because the money on offer if total Sh*te, You'd be lucky to be offered €10 an hour so 40hrs x 10 = €400 after tax/prsi/levy you'd probley clear €320!

As another boards member (Donkeyballs) said, you'd be better off flipping burgers in McDonalds as the money is the same without the dangers of Truck Driving.

Personally If I were you stay in Canada, Ireland is screwed for many years to come and the Uk is only slightly better.

Check this link for example

    thanks for that faith+1

yeah my visa is up over here. i could stay on and work labouring on the sites on a tourist visa but thats just a road to nowhere and i'll just mess things up for myself in the future as i really want to settle here at some stage.

i have a friend down in calgary whos a trucker who could get me a job, but because i also need a work visa with that job i have to have 2 years experience under my belt to get that visa. no two ways about it.

i dunno, i'm hating the fact i have to go back home but at this stage i've no choice. tbh at this stage if i was given the chance i'd work minimum wage on a truck for two years just to get the experience, but from what you're saying even that seems a pretty slim chance. thanks for your replies

Things are not great in Ireland but if you try look at position with Haulage Companies who operate between Ire and GB you might get something half decent.
    Stobart www.stobartgroup.co.uk

They are setting up a base in Ireland. Could be worth looking into
