VRT on a damaged car

    Hi all

Anyone know about the way VRT works when importing an accident-damaged car from the UK with the intention of fixing it up here.

Does the VRT amount payable take into account the condition (and hence the lower value) of the car at the time of import - or is it based on the full value (ie: as if the car was in normal/good condition.)

Be interested to know if anyone has brought in a salvage car from the UK or NI.

they used to give 5% off the vehicle but dont think they do that anymore..
the car has to be fixed and in roadworthy condition for inspection

I was told by someone in the vrt office that you can appeal the cost after you pay it if there is damage, if you get a mechanic to give an assesment as to how much it will cost to fix they may give back some of vrt. Im not 100 percent sure about this as its just what someone told me a few years ago.

Best of luck with this project, the way it worked when the revenue commissioners themselves were collecting the vrt was that the car would fall into the "poor" category. You then had your car repaired and returned with then documetation confirming repair costs and seek revision the the initial amt.
The new arrangements regarding payment of the vrt are very hit and miss as a lot of the centres are not yet clued in as to whats allowable.

yes get a quote/receipts from a panel beater and take photos of the cars damage too..but the buggers will tie you up in alot of red tape and could take ages to get moneyback if anything at all
