You calculate how fat you are according to your BMI.

If its over 25, you are fat!

It's after telling me mine is 22.7 but I know this is wrong. It's around 16.

Am I still 'fat' if all my weight is muscle?

Exactly, these online BMI calculators are useless.

Anyone who's ever played a sport like rugby will end up that way. Mine's the same, and while I'm certainly not exactly where I want to be, I still look relatively lean. I've a 49" chest too, which can't be taken into account. Build is a determining factor.

That's what I was thinking. That thing says Mike Tyson is 'Obese' in the below photo.

    Total fukking nonsense.

Yeah - I have a few rugger friends who take the piss out of BMI all the time. I can see why!!

If you want to find out if you are fat you need to measure your waist-hip ratio. That'll give you a good indication. Or if you look down and can't see your toes, that is also a good indication that you are fat. Or you could have big boobs, or you have big man boobs..

Another indication would be if people run laps around you for training.

18.7, but BMI is a pretty bad scale for a lot of people, it doesn't account for muscle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Ok most people know about the muscle issue when it comes to BMI. Most people on boards wont be muscular athletes (Id wager) and also this isnt supposed to be hugely technical and scientific. Just abit of fun for your lunchtime etc.

I'm big boned. Not a muscular athlete but put on muscle very quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

It is true. These online BMI calculators don't take in muscle mass and bone weight.

Although the online BMI calculator says I've got a BMI of around 23. In reality its more like around 19-20 (maybe a bit higher now that I've gained a few pounds due to the exams).

The BMI calculating tool thing which uses an electric charge to calculate the amount of fat in your body based on your bodies resistance is more accurate is measuring how fat you are!

Isn't bone weight a misnomer? A bit like saying I have a heavy brain.Muscle is not really accounted for with BMI but it also only makes a difference if you are particularly muscular.

Not the most accurate figure in the world but gives a sort of gauge even though based on people who were underfed at the time.

    BMI ratings are flawed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,595 ✭✭✭bonerm

BMI is a useless analysis tool. Why, according to BMI Arnold Schwarzenegger is a flabby bastard!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭FatherLen

bmi results dont take muscle into account and muscle is much heavier than fat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,736 ✭✭✭Irish Guitarist

Mine is 23 if I measured my height properly. It would have been lower a few months ago but I didn't go out for as many walks as I usually do during the winter.

I think BMI is a load of nonsense anyway.

For the most part, yes, but for some, not so much. I thought it was complete bollocks until I had a doctor comment on X-rays of mine that my bones were much, much thicker than most people's, and even thicker than other people of my size and build. It also accounts for why I've never broken a major bone, despite ten years of rugby and assorted other things. For the most part though, yes, I think it's bollocks.
