I'm in the market to buy as the title says. I'm looking for a 2l or a 2.5l diesel, I'm not fussy after that.

I have mostly bought used cars all my driving life so I'm used to that, but It has been a while so what should I be looking out for and what could I expect to pay, thanks.

Facelifted E46 320d from 2001 onwards suffered from turbo failure. I'd try and find a pre 2001 E46 320d, it was 136bhp and didn't suffer the same problem with the turbo as the 150bhp engine in the later model. Also make sure the swirl flaps in the manifold have been removed and replaced with blanks as the swirl flaps have been known to disintegrate and get ingested into the engine, so bye bye engine.

Do search for either on here and there were a few threads on the subjects recently.

you can get 520,525 or 530d in E39 facelift 01+ on. The you outrun the 520. Alternatively the E46 as has been mentioned above...

Don't think the E39 was every offered as 2.0 litre diesel in right hand drive.

I've decided to sell on the BMW 320d, its served me well over the last 6 months were its spent most of its time up and down the M1 on the daily commute. Some of you might remember that I bought the car from Topcat during the summer, it hasn't missed a beat since and continues to impress me in terms of its ability to eat up the miles in relative comfort. Its very economical, I've average about 900 kms per tank over the past 6 months. Anyway, heres the details and pics:

2001 E46 BMW 320d SE in steel gray

    123600 miles
    NCT 08/11, tax 01/11

Full black leather interior, auto-dim rear view mirror, cruise control, climate control, rear parking sensors, boot lip spoiler aftermarket Blaupunkt stereo (display colour matched to dash lights) with built in bluetooth handsfree, new floor mats, 17" BMW alloys, all tyres good (rears recently replaced with Kumho Ecsta Sports), Eibach lowering springs (originals thrown in), clear front side indicator pods, smoked side repeaters and finally, a set of roof bars (and a litre bottle of oil!).

The service history is pretty complete, I undertook an engine service @ 123k (oil + filter, fuel/air/pollen filter, turbo oil seperator filter - fit and forget vortex type, EGR valve cleaned). This is the 136bhp model - it has a better built turbo than the 150bhp and no swirl flaps to worry about.

the spec of the above is quite comprehensive. although that said, i would take a facelift e39 with a 6 cylinder over it. the below is nice, dont know if the op wants manual or auto though...

throw an msport bumper on it and you have one damn good looking car!

op are you looking for a diesel due to doing alot of driving?

That E46 looks to be in great condition and well looked after, nice colour too (same colour as my E90 :)) and very nice spec on it. One of the last 136bhp models I'd say.

With any E39 you can face big bills on both petrol and diesel cars at this stage. Do your homework, find one with a FSH, go in with you eyes open and be willing to spend a couple of thousand on maintenance in the first few years of ownership.

Some say the are the best car BMW ever built, maybe, but they are not the best built car BMW ever made, if you get the distinction. That accolade still goes to the E34.
