Data protection for web content?

    Does the data protection act govern information published web forums and the like?

    For example, if you used your real name as a username, would you be able to insist that it was changed, even if the Website did not usually facilitate that?

    What if the Website is based in a different country? Is the law still applicable?

    Yes in principle it would cover the forum, but I doubt there is any obligation on the host if the poster knowingly put the information into the public domain.

    And how do you know if it is the real name unless there is other information that identifies the individual? the obligation is protect the undisclosed data associated with the user name. the user name is already in the public domain. it is beyond protection.
