Promotion Dilemma - should I announce my interest?

Hi, if any reader can offer advice/correct etiquette than thanks in advance. My company has a vacancy due to a senior manager leaving and I think I would be very capable of carrying out the role. I am currently in a managerial role which was directly under the person who left. Is it "the done thing" to approach a Managing Director and declare your interest in the role (either in person or by email, etc)?

Do it in person. As someone who has a say in who gets promoted where I work, if the employee has a hunger for the promotion it is generally seen as a good thing.

It would seem to be entirely logical for a 'next in command' to look for a vacancy. There might be all sorts of reasons why you would not get it, but no harm at all in asking.

Go for it- approach the manager in person and express your interest.
Nothing to lose, these opportunities are rare enough in a career so grab it by the balls!

Go for it. I went for senior role , asked the boss, he said " I would have been disappointed if you HADN'T approached me about this"
