Remote on earphones not working

    Hi guys,

My apologies if this has been asked already but I have a question about my iPod's earphones. Its a iPod touch 3rd generation. I got it just over a year ago (Nov 2009).

The remote on the earphones stopped working a few weeks ago. But every now and again it would work. Except lately it has completely stopped until yesterday it worked once and then again died. I wouldn't mind buying new earphones (as not having the remote is annoying me) but the fact it works intermittently is making me think it might be able to be fixed.

Has anyone here had a similar problem or know how to fix it?

    Cheers

Well, it might be a bad connection or frayed wire in the earphone cable, in which case new earphones are in order.

But I had a similar problem with my Klipsch earphones on my iPhone, which were fairly new (and expensive) so the stubborn part of my brain refused to believe that they needed replacing. Earphones and mic worked fine, but remote was very temperamental, and getting worse with time.

So, with a torch, I took a look inside the headphone port on the iPhone. Sure enough, there was a bit of pocket lint (mainly tissue) jammed well into the bottom of the port. It was hard to see at first, even with the torch. Took it out carefully with a pin, and all was well with my earphone remote again.

So it's worth a good look in there to see if there are any obstructions before you go looking at replacing the headphones.
