Ok im thinking of getting rid of my 8.5 year old Focus which i know is not worth feck all(maybe €2k as it has 90k on the clock). So what does everyone recommend. Engine wise im thinking 1.4 is enough as i dont fancy giving our lovely government any extra in tax. The newer the better :D

I was being slightly flippant, octavia is the default answer round here. I'd say you'll have to give more detail of what you like in a car and what you use one for to get constructive answers...

Have a Focus and like the new ones but thinking a change might be good. Have always had a hatchback too so dunno should i stick with them or not? Its only used for driving shiity country roads to work and the odd drive at the weekend. Approx 300 miles a week. Im late 20's so style is not that important anymore. Cheap to run and with as few problems as possible are what i want.

if you go for a 08 car, the new tax law means you are not restricted to a 1.4, you can drive a 1.6 or even higher for less car tax now as it is tied to emissions. Lots of good cheap diesels around now too. I would say a diesel octavia is a great option, or even a1.6 focus diesel

Too old for me, 1.8 means too much in tax and petrol and its yellow

you have 10k you won't spend 4.5k on tax and petrol. Lifes to short not too.

No i have 10k and not spending it on an older car than the one i have. I want something that will be relatively trouble free for 4/5 years.

Strongly considering one alright...An 08 would give 4-5 years fairly trouble free too :D

Golf GT sport? 1.4 but has a supercharger and turbocharger so it's nice and quick. You should be able to get a 140bhp version for your money but here's a 170bhp version for 12k. You could probably knock em down. 1 year warranty and low mileage too.

Yep and Toyota's aren't as reliable as they used to be back in the day...

Still pretty unlikely it will be a money pit either. The chances are it will be trouble free for years.

Wasn't saying the corolla would be a bad buy, just that reliability isn't solely based on how old the car is! You could have a great experience with a 10 year old car and a terrible one with a 3 year old car!

Ya I agree, can't be sure about any car but a N/A 1.4 Corolla is about as safe as you can get really.

But much more likely to have more problems with an older car.

Not too keen on Golfs so think i'll be giving them a miss.

Looks like a Focus or a Corolla at the minute unless someoone else can give me other ideas.

What about something French? Peugeot 308, Renault Megane.
Or even another alternative from the VW stable, a Seat Leon?

Ah im 29 and while i wouldnt be driving a micra or anything im not too bothered really. If it looks half decent i'd be happy enough. Its only a car and i'd be more interested in something thats cheap to run and problem free than driving around in some 2 litre car thats gonna cost me a fortune to run.

    Fair enough.
Still think Corollas were buit for this.

Eh.... If you're someone that says "its only a car" then a corolla will probably do!
