I have just finished a week of delivery work for a sub_contractor as a box van driver.
I started at 7am. Had to find my load (white goods i.e. Washing machines tvs ect ) in a very disorganised yard, load my van then drive to each customer, collect their old machine and the wrapping, fill out all paperwork in triplicate and return to base before five and unload my van.
    The base is in Dublin.
First day 22 items for Co. Louth. Left yard at 9.30 returned with 2 items at 19.00
Second day 22 items in Dublin Left yard at 9.00 returned at 19.00
Third and fourth day in Meath very similar. It was brought to my attention that I was a bit "slower" that the other drivers and I should speed up and complete all deliveries.
Last Day 23 items for Co Cavan Left yard at 11.00 because nobody could find a number of tvs for the van
Returned at 01.00. yes one in the morning.
All this for 9.50 an hour. When I brought this to the attention of my boss he said it was easy to get someone else.
I worked with four different helpers in the five days I did and all of them left.
Is this the future of work. Must we go back to slavery and subservience to keep a job. God help us all

Thats what the majority of employers are like these days, play the old 'you're lucky to have a job' card.

Your boss sounds like a complete bastard saying that to you.

Once you're doing less than a 48 hour week and getting suitable rest and breaks you really have no reason to complain. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_Time_Directive

Longer hours = more money, and minimum wage is only €7.65.

Give the job some time. Most employees in a new environment need time to get up to speed and match the output of employees who know how the systems work. This is usually represented by a lower output from new employees when they start, in this case the employer is expecting you to close this gap by putting in the extra hours. I am sure that if you put the head down and get stuck in you will get up to speed and be getting home at the same time of the other employees.

    Thank you everyone
Just to update the situation My now ex boss only paid me for 10 hours each day. He said all his employees i.e. 3 were being paid only 10 hours per shift.
He was outraged that I did not do all the work in that time and said I cost him money.
    C'est la vie. Thats life
I wish him well in the future

You're better off getting away from someone like that.. they are scumbags who no matter how well they are doing will always try to cut corners and treat their employees like slaves..

I've worked for a few like that over the years.. in the end I learned that you're better off walking away and leaving them too it, because they are never going to change, if anything it will get worse..

It's the future of work for people who don't educate themselves or want to better themselves. The boss is correct. It is easy to get someone else.

FYI: I work in IT and I do get paid well; I do have to work long hours, not unlike what you described, and I work away too much from my family. But I control my job because I have deliberately chosen my work pattern so that I can gain the benefit later.

You are the one who is deciding to go back to slavery and subservience - there's nothing stopping you from bettering your life with a career change; There's plenty more van drivers coming on-sttream.

Welcome to the transport sector were some employers treat you like s**te;),I know off a few Irish companies that pay their drivers(artic trucks) 80e a day yet you could work upto 15hrs for it.
And if your waiting on a return load from UK/europe for a day or two you wont get paid,Now most of these companies employ eastern european drivers as not many Irishman will work for them so they abuse the eastern euro guys.
This is a link to a primetime program about some of these rogue employers.
