    :Dhello
I am looking at getting my mercury (aka 'silver') fillings replaced with less toxic composite.
Is there any holistic dental practice in Dublin city centre?
I found a few, but all outside of town, or in other part of the country?
    Thanks

This has been done to death use the search function. In summary any dentist can replace silver filling with white composite one. Only a holistic dentist (there is no such specialisty BTW) will bull**** you about chronic illness, scare you, charge you twice as much and pretend they are doing something special.

You forgot to say that they will pretend that amalgam is toxic.

My mum has a severe condition related to heavy metals present in her system. Would it not make sense to remove them from their source in the first place, i.e. replace the filling??

How was it determined these metals are related to a severe condition (what condition) and specifically to her? Do not touch so called "holistic" practices with a barge pole. In my experience they are either deluded and/or taking you for a ride.

Will the alternatives cause other conditions for you mother?

Go to a reputable dentist and listen to their advice . Your concerns are probably unfounded but it is not fair to say your mother does not need her fillings replaced outright, this can be a complex issue. The main reason to replace amalgams is in cases of an allergic reaction, however this is relatively rare. Again are the alternative "risk free"?

Do read the other posts on this topic as suggested.

Please read this first. There are many people willing to take your money under false pretenses.

I am jaded orthoman......jaded. I realise people with these chronic illnesses will hold onto any cause or solution that seems to make sense to them. I understand their reasons, and I do not expect them to understand the issues or evidence. I understand where ever there are people to be taken advantage of there will be some people who will fly in the face of GOOD evidence and use fear to take money from these already unfortunate people. This will not change, even fitzgeme cannot fix it.

    Flame suit on.

Why do people never come on here and ask about getting their composite (white) fillings replaced with amalgams as the composites "cause an incresed risk of breast cancer?". They don't cause breast cancer, but there are plenty of "alternative" ( i'll be kind ) folk who have happily put their wacky thoughts online. Why is it always the amalgams-there's an equal amount of shyte to be found 'bout composites from the alternative scam artists

BRUSSELS, Belgium: A new study, conducted on behalf of the European Commission, recommends phasing out dental amalgam use over the next few years owing to mercury’s negative impact on the environment. According to the recently published study results, the ban should be combined with improved enforcement of the EU waste legislation regarding dental amalgam.

Dental amalgam has been in use for over 150 years for the treatment of dental cavities and is still used by the majority of dentists. It is often felt that this is an ideal material because of its longevity but sometimes perhaps for the wrong reasons. There is an increased risk of fracturing the tooth with large amalgam fillings, as it is really just a metal block, which has been wedged into the teeth. The point here is that we are trying to save the teeth not the fillings.

Dental amalgam is a combination of different metals with about 50% mercury. It is estimated that many tens of tons of mercury are placed in people’s mouths through amalgam worldwide. It has been a controversial material ever since it was introduction due to its mercury content, and the controversy still rages both in the dental and in the public domain, . . .

Your post is irrelevant to the rest of the thread DeDublinMammy. And there is no controversy.

Do you know how much it would cost to replace the fillings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,080 ✭✭✭EoghanIRL

You would need approx 100 amalgam fillings to exceed your daily dosage of mercury which you get from the environment . You only have 32 teeth !

You might be more at risk getting amalgam fillings removed because if the margins are badly worn etc there is a chance of the hg coming out of the filling .
