    Hi,

I had a 2TB external hard drive stolen from my check in luggauge on an Aer Lingus flight just before Christmas.

Does anyone know what recourse I have here? Should I get on to Aer Lingus?

Im not sure do I have insurance as the flight was booked by the client I work for and I dont want to get on to them about it as there are my client and pay my company a lot for my services

Try contacting the ground staff at the airport you flew out of eg servieair etc. I think that should be your first stop. I know with check in bags they go through security as well and your case May have Ben opened and the item removed and they forgot to put it back. The try emailing head office or Aer Lingus.

I assume you have double checked with hotel, offices etc that you visited in cause you left behind.

Have you seen the way those bags get thrown around?

Ya I checked the hotel, office, everything. I definitely remember putting it in my luggage bag though. It was the crazy time before Christmas and I had to sleep in the airport. My bag was checked in for over 12 hours.

Thanks for the advice. Will do the suggested.

To be honest I usually put all my valuables in my carry on. I just didnt think that anyone would think an external hard-drive was worth stealing.

I see the following on the Aer Lingus website:

"Pilferage not reported at time of arrival must be reported in writing, or by contacting Baggage Tracing Department within 7 days of receiving your baggage."

Simply, none to be honest. The only compensation is a hard lesson in what not to do when travelling!

Most airlines, and I'm sure Aer Lingus is no different, have clauses in their conditions of carriage advising against checking in valuable items/electronics etc and basically absolve themselves of responsibility for anything which may be removed.

Loss/damage to bags generally needs to be reported at baggage handling desk in the airport baggage hall, where you would fill out an irregularity report.

on a side note was there anything on the HD that could cause an issue with data protection.

Nothing on the drive but TV shows and Movies. I do not consider this item valuable at all. At what point do you draw the line between whats valuable and whats not.

I would consider my suits and shoes a lot more valuable. Should I start taking them on my carry on luggage?

To be honest what ass would steal a two year old hard-drive worth about €40.

The only reason I can think of, if the person was looking for sell-able user data, he/she is going to be disappointed.

I had a laptop stolen out of my luggage on an Aer Lingus flight. I had travel insurance too. Was not covered because they expect you to take with your carry on.

I'm sorry apart from the risk of being stolen, I find it really silly to put something like a laptop in the hold. These are delicate items and the bags get thrown around, real chance of it being broken!

Always take valuable and delicate things on as hand baggage!
