I was just wondering , does external insulation actually work ?

The average cost is around €12000 , there's a possible grant of €4000 , so total cost would be roughly €8000 ..

Has anyone had it done and is happy with the increased warmth etc. ?

Can it be done in conjunction with cavity bead insulation to increase the overall insulation properties ? or is there any point in doing both ?
    thanks for any replies .

price depends on the system you go with. the most expensive and arguably the best systems can be twice the cost of a 'man with a C2 and trowel' system:)
Simple answer is the good systems are worth the cash, but your Architect needs to issue the builder with appropriate details regardless of what product you go for and he should be mindful of the performance specifications, insurances & guarantees...

may I ask what thickness of insulation your architect has specified?
and what BER you are going for?

whats systems would you consider the best? are you talking a product or general details of the job? by the sounds of it it could push it out of my price range

    systems
By 'system' I mean there are the following 'products'/different components are in an ewi system, many of these products are made by different manufaturers

    Insulation plinth
    Insulation normal
    Firebreaks
    Wall primer
    Adhesive
    Reinforcing layer
    mesh
    Render primer
    Render
    Profiles
    Fixings for insulation
Fixings for fire breaks (outside contractor)
Window sill many companies out there may use inferior products, so thats why I suggested using one of the major respected systems on the market.
    details
details need to be worked out with the specifics of your house: footings, window reveals, eaves and attic insulation overlap, vents etc
    Cost
basically if the jobs not done right, you may have problems.

    hope this helps

A final word of warning on EWI.

I was talking to one of the bigger system suppliers and they recently were told by a member of the NSAI that it's a price race to the bottom at the moment. With the associated drop in quality.

To do EWI correctly it is very labour intensive which costs.

my house was built with cavity blocks. if using EWI is there something to be done to stop alot of the heat from rising through the hollow blocks and out the roof. i couldnt see any detail in that link

my fault, look at page 44 (or 49 when typed into the pdf reader) then look at how the insulation (yellow colour) continues to the attic insulation, stopping/reducing heat loss. this may involve raising the lower section of the roof sightly (fir out the joists) to accommodate this insulation, and may not be possible if for example you live in a terrace.
Isup, more info on your house may help answer this more accurately

    Hi All

I am thinking of getting the external walls pumped for external insulation. Can any one recommend a reputable company that provides this service at a reasonable price?

    Thanks
