Isn't it annoying when you're typing something and the spell check says it's wrong because you spelled a word like hypnotise instead of hypnotize and neighbours instead of neighbor...

Why can't my computer speak proper english?!

Because you haven't told it what proper English is?

    Axe it.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

You could embrace the dark side and starting pronouncing your Zs like Cs or you could change it to British English.

I have the region set to Ireland.
I looked up and found "british english" in language, so I selected that but it just added that to a list of languages. I'm using a mac so its a bit weird...

Apparently will change it next time I log onto to the computer... hmm...

Ah so you've already turned to the dark side.

Yeah. But I'm gonna switch to Windows soon.

That really bugs me alright. Damn computer making me second guess my spelling. I remember in college writing a program in C++ and when I compiled I had about a million errors. After about an hour or two of going through every line of hundreds of lines of code I realised my only error was spelling colour instead of 'color'. I was very mad! Aaaaah, even typing this post it's telling me that realised should be spelled realized. Why can't we just standardise everything. Damn Webster!

It is very annoying when the spell check says you're wrong and you go back to check your spelling and realise you spelt it right and the stupid computer wants you to change it to american. Ye're all like no! feck off!!!

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

Whenever I do presentations in work and I spell things the European way, all my workmates give out to me and tell me to learn how to speak/write "American." :(

As a result, I've noticed I'm dropping my "u's" and using "z's" instead of "s's." Oh dear.

I hope you and your Windoze box will be well matched.
... I looked up and found "british english" in language, so I selected that but it just added that to a list of languages. ...
You'll need to delve just a little deeper and select "Setup..." from the drop-down box for languages. RTFM indeed as suggested earlier.
... I'm using a mac so its a bit weird...
Not in the least; this purported weirdness on a Mac is often a symptom of other things entirely.

Having set all the correct system-wide language options, you may then discover that the dozy developer has built-in and hard-coded language dictionaries and proofing tools specific to his little application, ignoring the system-wide ones available in /Library; mickey-mouse non-standards compliant outfits like Adobe, Micro$oft, Mozilla, Google, etc. tend to do this with their apps as this is what they are used to in the chaotic DIY world of Windoze. This usually means setting application-specific language options which in the case of Micro$oft Word may inexplicably change from one launch of the program to the next.

Stick with Stevie and the Apple Inc. boys and girls for a slicker, neater more rewarding user experience, provided you RTFM of course. ;)

I'd tell them to screw off, you shouldn't have to use incorrect spelling (in this part of the world) just because they do.

Obviously I've no problem with Americans using American English but when I see people over here using American English, and who were probably brought up on Nickelodeon programming, it just grates me.

Honestly I wouldn't come back to Ireland if you paid me..:o No jobs, no sushi, too many knackers!! I do miss it though!! :D

It's very, verrrry difficult holding my tongue when I submit an article or a document and it's returned to me with a big circle around the words "centre," or "theatre," or "favourite!"

Ah, so you live over there? That changes things I suppose, but it would still bug me! :D

Several supermarkets and convenience shops have small packs beside the sarnies and then there's Sushi King. I used to get lunch there once a week until I got sick of it. Did get proficient with a set of chopsticks though :D

Because Apple comply with all the standards and there's nothing more rewarding than paying the most monopolising company on the planet more money to build you a computer you could build yourself for half the price.

OT: If you set your location properly, that should take care of most programs. I find Firefox automatically directs me to the British English download link if I need to get it again. After that it leaves me alone.

Ach, the packaged crap isn't the same. And you can't get it in Limerick, which is where I'm from!
