    Hey Guys,

So, i've been driving my parent 307 1.4 HDI ('04) for the past four years. Had my full licence for the past three.

I had planned on buying a Golf/Corolla HB/307 but the asking prices on Carzone seem very high.

I'd like a diesel as i'll be doing around 10000-13000 miles a year.

    Some questions:
1-Are the quoted prices on Carzone anywhere near the selling prices or are they going for a lot less. I was told by a friend that you'd do a deal for a lot less, when offering cash.
2-I'm very concerned about reliability and that's why i'm considering a Corolla. Should I rule out a Golf or 307 as I hear they can give some trouble.
3-What are your opinions on importing from the UK. It seems like a good idea but I wouldn't save much by the time you have NCT/VRT/TRAVEL etc.. The cars also seem to have very high mileage, whats that about?

    Any advice would be great..

    Thanks in advance guys..

You should be able to haggle around 5-10% off for cash and other things, or get stuff thrown in. We got a €4995 car town to €4.6k. Depends on the dealer.

Golfs are notriously good at holding onto value, so maybe consider something a little cheaper. Corollas arent the most attracive but the new Puntos seem not to miss a beat. Also worth looking at an Astra if they're in your price range. What's your budget?

What kind of budget do you have?

I don't really look at carzone anymore tbh, most people seem to price their cars as if they are made of gold. It's just an asking price, it could be well priced, or it could be some looper asking crazy money, it depends on the car in question.

10000-13000 miles isn't all that much, a diesel will most likely cost more than a petrol equivalent, seeing how everyone is going diesel mad these days. It's just something worth keeping in mind.

    Rule No.1....Dont use carzone.
    Rule No.2....Use Donedeal.

Suprised carzone is still in business TBH. Dreamer central, buy&sell.ie or donedeal.ie or local trader magazine.

Rule No.3 Forget 1 and 2 and use both Donedeal and Carzone and learn from one and the other what the good value out there is.

    I didn't mention a budget, sorry.

Well, I'd be happy to be on the road for €5000. Not really comfortable with much more tbh.

According to the Quinn site i'll pay approx €550-650 for insurance on 1.4hdi-2.0hdi respectively..

So I suppose, depending on if it's taxted or not €4000-4500 for the car. What would I get for this?

Mileage wise, is there much of a cost difference between a 1.4 petrol/1.9 diesel?

I suppose the 1.4hdi's are out of the question as they are hard to come by..

    Thanks.

you COULD look for good value on Carzone but like....that doesnt happen.

Stop with blanket statements. The art of doing a bit of research isn't being helped by suggestions to stick to certain places to look. Keep the search broad and open to begin with then let it narrow down to whatever it narrows down to.

Not quite a typical bangernomics car, but if it is as good as it looks in the ad it could be a quick (very quick) bargain for someone

Or this one from the bangernomics thread. It wont hang around though! It looks like a minter.

You have a threefold problem right there.

    1. Carzone is usually much more expensive than donedeal.
    2. Golf's and Corrolla's hold their value like almost no other car.
    3. You're looking for a diesel. 75% of new cars being sold are diesel, this trend is only recent. This has left the second hand car market with a glut of petrol cars, and an undersupply of diesels.

    no alloys, black bumpers

either of these carzone ones look better imo

There are a lot of cars out there you can get for 5 grand, but if you're looking for 2002/03 the best you can hope for is a Focus, Peugeot 306 or Astra perhaps.

If you're doing 13k mileage, then the cost difference will be quite high in a year.

A good diesel should get you an average MPG of 48 (10.55MP/Litre). A petrol will come in at around 35 MPG (7.7MP/Litre). If petrol costs €1.45 you'll be paying €2,448 a year. If diesel costs €1.36 you'll be paying €1,675 a year.

No argument with that but I would be concerned about the possible unplanned costs that might happen with an older modern diesel. My own view on modern diesels is that they make sense if you are going to do a lot of miles while they are under guarantee but subsequent owners could well face big bills.

Interesting point that I was completely unaware of.. Are diesels more expensive to maintain/repair? (in general)
    Thanks.

    Ok guys..

Have left this alone for a while but looking to pick something up in the next week or so.

I'm looking at a 307 XS 1.4hdi, 04 with 60k miles.. I have yet to be quoted a price from the dealer as it hasn't been traded yet.

Just wondering what kind of quote I should expect.. would I get it for €4000?

    ---
And the most important question of all..: Would you advise I buy that car? Good/Bad??
    ---

Also, out of interest.. you see lots of 04 golfs/307s/corollas online for around 5000-5500..

What do you guys think of offering the dealer €4000 cash and getting a deal? Could I realise a discount like that for cash??

    Thanks a lot in advance!!

I wouldn't buy one, as it's very, very slow.

I'm with you on that but i've been driving the parent 1.4hdi for the past few years now. I think it's come to the stage where i'm comfortable with its power (or lack of :-P) and I no longer know any better.

It would suit me at the moment while i'm still in college with low tax insurance etc..

Thanks for the advice though.. I suppose i'm requesting advice on the techincal side as I wouldn't know much in that regard.

Given that engine and the mileage do you think it would be be relatively hassle free? I had a guy tell me yesterday about a pump that injects liquid into the fuel to help emissions. I should check this has been replaced as it will fail NCT otherwise..

    Any thoughts??

    Thanks!
