Im going to London in a few weeks time on a weekend trip with a few lads. We want to stay somewhere central enough close to a few pubs/clubs, etc. What area of London would be a good idea to stay in?

try shoreditch. there's plenty of places to stay at a decent rate around there, and it's close to some great nightlife. brick lane is great for food and you won't go wrong with the 24 hour bagel shop there. think of it. eclairs for something like 20p at 4am!!
also a short trip on the tube to the west end.

Kensington if you have a few bob to spend. Good bars and clubs.
Equally good is Islington (Angel Tube station) but much more reasonably priced. Lots of pubs and night clubs.

Avoid staying in central West End such as Soho, Leicester Square,
Piccadilly Circus. Not particularly nice by night.

Huge London thread at the top of the page, you will find plenty of info on London and where to stay.

I would echo Kensington as a place to stay.

Nothing wrong going out in the West End,personally don't go out there myself, just like I don't go out in Dublin city centre, can be a bit too touristy for my liking, I wouldn't use it as a base to stay just on the basis that it is too busy.

OP if you want a very cheap night out, try collide-o-scope at kings college students union off strand. the music is very indie but the booze is cheap as.

How much do you want to spend per person per night on somewhere to stay?

Saw your link re the hostel, personally I wouldn't stay in Kings Cross, nothing wrong with the area per se, just a lot better places to stay.

Assume you don't mind sharing a room? what is the max between two people you would be willing to spend?

What dates do you have in mind, will do a quick look up for you on a couple of places.

Not going till the 4th of March for 2 nights but want to get it booked early. At the moment there is 3 of us going but probably 4. Were going over for an Arsenal match and a couple of nights out.

Dont mind sharing at all. I suppose would be willing to spend ~€80 mark on a room. What area would you recommend staying in?

I would say South Kensington, you are 22mins-25 mins direct by tube to Arsenal :)

First website is the hotel I normally stay in.

Second website is a hotel just down the road from this one, 3min walk, no experience of the second hotel, but its the same area in Kensington

    http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/london/lonhi/hoteldetail?rooms=1

    http://www.premierinn.com/en/search!execute.action

Just did a quick check, first website you would be looking at 71 euro approx per person per night, the Premier Inn looks like it could be cheaper.

The Holiday Inn has better facilities and much better bar, but if you are not going to be using the bar/hotel much then you don'y have to worry about that.

Both hotels use Gloucester Road tube station -direct link to Heathrow 40 mins.

Edit: Rate quoted above is 142 Euro per room per night, two people max per room.
