Worn Focus Key

I have a Ford Focus (year - 00) which I lost the second key to a bout two years ago. The problem now is the main key has become worn and sometimes it is an effort to open any door or even start the engine and it takes a number of goes. Went to a main dealer who quoted me €250 to replace key and he made out it was a big job which involved getting correct codes. As the car is fairly old with almost 200k on the clock I dont really want to put that kind of money into it as will be changing it within the year. Any cheaper suggestions of sorting this prob would be great. Cheers.

its not a big job as such.

its actually very fast and very simple, but the only people who can do it (with the exception of very few) are the dealers.

so to use a technical term, they have you by the balls.

250 does sound expensive though, id be thinking more along the mines of half that, shop around

Ford give instructions on how the programme additional keys in the handbook. Google will also tell you.

You can also reprogramme s/h fobs from ebay, and only get the shaft cut (about €5!).

Can you post up a few close up pictures of your key with a quality camera. I might be able to 'read' the key and give you the key number.

Not sure if it is different with the Focus but with my Fiesta you need two coded keys to program a new one.

Your getting mixed up. You have to have 2 keys at hand to program the second new one. So lets say if you have only one key, Ford will have the second new un-coded key at hand. When they insert your current key into the ignition to start the coding process they will have 10 seconds to swap the new key into the ignition. Its apart of the coding process.
