Yeah it will save fuel and any money you save you can put in towards a new starter motor:pac:

    And a new turbo.

Turbos need a good oil supply at the correct pressure while they're spinning.
Frequent engine stops and starts are generally not good for a turbo because it is spinning for those short periods while oil pressure is low.

    +1

That's it's main purpose. Read an article recently that said such systems contribute very little to fuel economy but are great for marketing purposes

    Don't listen to them.

You won't need a new starter or turbo - these guys are full of sh1t.

I'm fairly sure that Audi (in this case) have taken into account the extra potential wear on the starter motor and either beefed it up, made it more servicable or adjusted the engine timings to put less stress on it when the S&S is engaged.

The same applies to turbos, I'm fairly sure that they are aware of the low RPM/Pressure factors caused by city driving which is going to apply whether S&S exists or not.

Personally I have S&S in the MiTo and the car software seems to apply an easier startup with S&S than with the ignition key. This possibly has to do with the Multi-Air too, that alters the pressures on the turbo amongst other things.
